Lot number: WP 4, activity 4.2, pilot actions - equipment for the implementation of artificial reefs measure to enhance conservation of marine biodiversity. Pilot action WP-4.2 In accordance with the project Document, FB-8, Ministry of the Environment of Albania, after extended internal consultation of the project team and the expertise of the AAB member, as well as the inputs received so far from the meeting of local tables held in the country, has identified three pilot actions to be implemented in the framework of the WP-4, as follows: I. Conservation measures by the means of artificial reefs in Karavasta Lagoon, within the territory of the National Park Divjake-Karavasta Ecological functioning of artificial reefs is based on the increase of number of species the development of special heterogeneity of substrate in the direction of height, orientation and interstitial intermediate spaces. Potential use of artificial reefs as a “soft technology” intervention to increase productivity of sea environment has enabled transformation of traditional fishing which is defined as catch fishery because it is exclusively based on an intake of organisms in a culture fishery or in oriented activity under the management of environment cycle of species with commercial interest. The concept is based on the use of artificial reefs to create more areas of new controlled fishing and more areas of extensive aquaculture than in simple aggregation of organisms and as consequence increase of fishing that is caused by the artificial reef. Protection of the areas of reproduction and the first phases of development of bottom species and development of forms less or more developed aquaculture through the establishment of suitable habitats brings inevitably the reduction of mortality either by fishing or natural of ichthyic populations and in increase of production potentials of aquatic environment with consequence increase of resources and direct and/or indirect benefits for all the fishery sector. Artificial reefs can create valid administration instruments able to diversify activity of fishing influencing the use of fishing means. For this activity artificial reefswill be produced and placed under water in the Karavasta Lagoon. The proposal should be presented according to the PRAG procedures.
