Faculty of Health and Life Sciences Department of Allied Health Professions BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Imaging BSc (Hons) Radiotherapy and Oncology September 2011 Please note the following items of equipment that you will be required to pay a deposit or purchase during your induction week:Re: Deposit payment and issue of TLD’s (All students) As a radiographer you are legally required to wear a thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) to monitor the radiation that you may be exposed to. In the normal day’s work a radiographer will be protected from unnecessary radiation, the monitor is worn for your own peace of mind and to ensure that any low levels of exposure to you as an individual are recorded and monitored. The TLD is a small badge that is worn whenever you are in the clinical setting or working in the practical rooms here at UWE. The TLD is changed in October, January, April and July. At these times an email will be sent out to remind you. The TLD must be returned within 4 weeks of the TLD’s expiry date or a fine will be incurred. To cover the cost of the initial purchase all students are asked to pay a returnable deposit of £25. This will be returned at the end of your time with us at UWE if all TLD’s have been returned. If you lose or break your TLD or it is returned later than requested you will be required to pay a further £25. This will cover the cost of purchasing a replacement for you to use. The original deposit will be retained until the end of your course. Deposits are to be paid on-line prior to induction week. Please use the following link to pay on-line: https://store.uwe.ac.uk/browse/product.asp?catid=762&modid=1&compid=1 (Please note: You must bring your confirmation of payment with you to the induction week. Once the deposit has been paid on-line you will be issued with your TLD and you will be asked to sign for it during the academic block in October. It is then your responsibility to look after your TLD and return it on time when reminded. If you have any queries or concerns please contact Fiona Chamberlain, Radiation Protection Supervisor / Senior Lecturer in 2K16 or telephone Ext. 88825. 1 Re: Radiographic Markers (Diagnostic Imaging students only) All Diagnostic Imaging students are required to have a set of radiographic markers before they start their practical radiography training. These are two small metallic letters ‘L’ and ‘R’ and they are placed on the radiographic image receiver or cassette prior to x-raying a patient. The letters signify the left or right side of the patient or, when x-raying limbs the left or right limb. The markers should be purchased on line and will cost £5.
