The needs of families and carers from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities have been largely overlooked. This research study aims to add to the literature about caring in a BME community. She is looking for Black Afro-Caribbean Carers caring for those with severe and enduring mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder. If you are the parent, sibling or partner of somebody who has a mental illness, and you have been for 5-10 years, then she is interested in hearing from you. This research project involves conducting one-to-one interviews of about an hour with carers. Refreshments will be provided and all participants will be entered into a prize draw to win a £25 high street voucher. Please contact Siobhan Smith on: s.l.smith@surrey.ac.uk or 01483 683979 if you are interested in finding out more. Do you care for a person with dementia? Fara Hamidi, a postgraduate student, is researching carers of people with dementia and the difficulties they experience in making decisions for their loved one. She aims to investigate whether carers are receiving adequate help and support from health and social care services and if not, what more needs to be done. She has designed a questionnaire, which takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, aimed at current caregivers of people with any type and severity of dementia (but who are living in the community). Fara was inspired to work on this project after speaking to a number of carers who all expressed the same difficulties in their caregiving role. If you are interested in taking part in this research, please contact Veronica for a copy of the questionnaire on 020 3031 2755 or email carers2@kingstoncarers.org.uk. What's On?
