FCPS Community Medicine Training Program at Health Services Academy 1 FCPS Training Program The Community Medicine Residency (CMR) Training Program was initiated in 1999 and is approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan. The Training program shall be incorporated within 1. The teaching and training of the MSPH program 2. Research and Development Department of Health Services Academy Mission The primary goal of the Community Medicine Residency Training Program at Health Services Academy is to educate caring and skilled physicians who are well-prepared to enter graduate and specialty training programs. They provide highly competent and compassionate, patient-centre care while demonstrating the highest level of professionalism and sensitivity to the diverse personal and cultural contexts in which medical care is delivered. At the end of the training, graduates should be able to: Develop, implement and evaluate effective public health interventions and programs in Pakistan and the developing world; Educate medical undergraduates and postgraduates and other health workers in the practice of public health; Develop and conduct research in public health issues; Deliver effective preventive and curative care including systematically improving quality of health care at first level care in rural and urban areas; Pursue continuous and self-directed professional learning to update and expand their knowledge and skills. Goals Educational: Achieve excellence in education of students for careers in medical practice or research by providing broad knowledge and skills, developing appropriate professional behavior, mastery of essential competencies and preparing students for continued intellectual growth. Research: Advance medical knowledge by conducting active programs in basic and applied research. Service: Provide the highest quality of medical care, as well as ensure access to health and educational services for the local, national and international communities. Duration of training The program is of four years duration. 2 Training Program at Health Services Academy Eligibility for FCPS II training Eligible candidates should have MBBS or equivalent degree approved by the PM&DC One year internship with six months in Medicine and allied and six months in Surgery and allied disciplines FCPS Part I in Community Medicine or Medicine and allied Experience in a public health setting is preferred The final selection is based on interviews with the Public Health faculty in the Health Services Academy. Working Status of Candidates The candidate shall work in one the following capacities during the course of training. Observer Assistant Performer under supervision Performer independently 3 Course content Specific curricula during the four-year program will include Epidemiology and Biostatistics Demographics and Population Dynamic. Social Health Reproductive Health Health Systems Environmental and Occupational Health Research methodology, ethical principles and other relevant public health topics The disciplines will be taught using a mixture of classroom teaching and applied settings. Classroom activities will include directed readings and discussions, facilitating tutorial of students etc. and experience in family medicine. 4 Year Wise Training Program Year I The training will be incorporated with teaching & training of the public health students and other personnel in the field of Public Health. The trainees shall attend the MSPH scheduled classes and field visits as observers; the PG Trainee shall accompany the R&D Field teams on household survey and other field research activities. The trainees are required to attend a two week Research Methods course and follow this with development of the synopsis. House hold survey The postgraduate student will be required to conduct and compile a report of household survey in 1st year of training. Press cutting The post graduate students will give their comments on two important press cuttings every month regarding health problems, planning and policy / population planning and policy. Dissertation Writing Selection of Topic, Synopsis writing and getting proposal approved by CPSP under close supervision of the Supervisor shall start with in the first 3 months after getting registered with CPSP. 6 Year II The training will be incorporated with teaching & training of the public health students and other personnel in the field of Public Health. The trainees shall deliver lectures, conduct discussion groups and tutorials in MSPH scheduled classes; the PG Trainee shall co-supervise MSPH students for their dissertations. The trainees are also required to design assessments for MSPH students. The trainees shall also attend the CPSP’s mandatory and other available and relevant workshops through out the year. SEQs & key development. Assessment of notebook & term papers. Research project of MSPH students. (Under supervision). Observation of oral exams. Computer training Attachments In accordance with CPSP protocol this program is scheduled keeping in view the options available to us and the authority of the chair of the supervisor and the institution. Objectives of these attachments are to expose the trainee to real settings of some places of public health importance so that one eventually could be able to: Describe the role and functions of the organization observed. Describe mechanism of developing policies and programs in health. Describe implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the health policies and programs. 8 THIRD YEAR The training will be incorporated with teaching & training of the public health students and other personnel in the field of Public Health. The trainees are required to deliver lectures, conduct discussion groups and tutorials in MSPH scheduled classes; the PG Trainee shall co-supervise MSPH students for their dissertation research and supervise field research teams. The trainees shall also attend the CPSP’s mandatory and other available and relevant workshops through out the year. The trainees shall also attend the CPSP’s mandatory and other available and relevant workshops through out the year. All attachments will be followed by submission of status reports. Year Wise Summary of Attachments: 1. Year I: No attachment (College training) 2. Year II: Health programs 3. Year III: Health management + NGOs 4. Year IV: National + Planning sites 11 Evaluation & Monitoring of the Training Program The proposed / suggested evaluation of the training program for FCPS-II will be done by: a. Head of the department / Supervisor b. Head of the institution. c. Faculty member of the CPSP. (if desired) Log Book Trainees are bound to maintain a record of all the activities performed during the training period on the Logbook provided / recommended by the CPSP. They will also get the Log book signed by the Supervisor at regular intervals.
