FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Project Youth Extension Service (YES!) is a national service program engaging college students
in service to meet the needs of military families facing deployment. Specifically, Project YES!
expands the resources of the DoD Yellow Ribbon Program. Project YES! provides
opportunities for students to give back to their communities and country through a year of
service, and further strengthens connections with the Cooperative Extension System, all while
meeting the critical needs of communities with high rates of families impacted by
deployments. As required, interns may also assist in other military related meetings, councils
or camps related to military children and youth.
What do Project YES! interns do?
Project YES! interns travel to Yellow Ribbon Program (YRP) and other military family
events throughout the nation and deliver specialized youth develop programs to children and
youth of deployed family members. Events are typically conducted on weekends and may be
conducted on or off military installations. Project YES! youth programs are educational,
interactive, hands on, fun activities.
Do interns need to be from a military family or have a 4-H background?
Interns do not have to be a member of a military family. Additionally, there is no
requirement for them to be a veteran or have any active duty, Guard or Reserve experience.
Likewise, there is no requirement that interns have a 4-H background.
How do I apply for a Project YES! internship?

Are interns required to move to NC State University or to miss any school?
Interns are not required to move to North Carolina or be a student at North Carolina State
University to participate in the internship. The internship is designed for currently enrolled
students. You'll be able to continue your academic studies while participating in Project YES!
events. There is no requirement to move to NC State University. Interns are required to attend
orientation in North Carolina, however interns then return to their home university for the
remainder of the internship.

Do I need special skills to be an intern?
Strong candidates for the internship program will have 1) previous experience working
with children and youth, 2) excellent organizational and training skills, 3) skill in coordinating
activities and establishing priorities, 4) excellent communication and presentation skills, and 5)
the ability to analyze problems and make well-reasoned, sound decisions.
Will I receive special training to participate?
Project YES! interns receive high-level training in leadership development, facilitation
skills, youth development and applicable curriculum during Intern Orientation. They also
receive on-going leadership and curriculum education throughout the year through a variety of
distance and on-line educational venues.
How will travel be arranged?
The method of travel to client locations is dependent upon various factor such as intern
schedules, distance to location, etc.; When feasible, interns will be required to drive to the
assigned location; When driving is not feasible, travel logistics are completed by the Project YES!
administrative staff. Interns will be provided all required support (airline, lodging, etc)
associated with each assignment
How far will I have to travel?
This is a national program, therefore interns may be asked to travel to any of the
contiguous states, Hawaii, Alaska or any of the US territories. Multiple factors (client
requirements, intern academic schedule, etc.) are considered when determining individual
assignments.
How are weekend assignments determined?
Interns provide academic, work, and personal schedules to the Program Director.
Customer requests for Project YES! support are then compared to intern availability to
determine the best match for location, cost, experience, etc. Every effort is made to maximize
resources while ensuring interns receive opportunities to experience a variety of topics,
locations, and leadership opportunities.

How long is the entire internship? Is it a full time position?
The internship requires a one-year commitment and a commitment to support a minimum
of a 1 military event per month. Additionally, interns must attend a mandatory intern
orientation and other training sessions, as required. (Interns must complete a North Carolina
State University job application and are considered "temporary employees" for the duration of
the internship).
How far in advance will I know my schedule?
Every effort is made to provide as much notice as possible. While some situations will
allow 3-4 weeks advance notice, there are times that a shorter notification may occur. In cases
of extremely short notification periods, interns will be contacted to discuss the logistics of the
request before they are matched against the request.
Will I be traveling every weekend?
Interns are required to support a minimum of military event per month. Events are
typically conducted on weekends. Typical events are 1-2 days long. Based upon availability,
individual preferences, funding and resources, more opportunities may be available.
What sort of intern project is required?
Interns complete a career-enhancing project under the guidance of a personally assigned
mentor. Projects are individually tailored to match the individual intern’s career interest.
What is the mentor's role in relation to the intern?
Mentors provide guidance throughout the career-enhancing project to further the interns
future career interest. They also serve as a resource to assist and guide the intern through a
variety of topics such as resume’ writing, interviewing, stress management. Additionally, they
provide expert guidance in matters more directly related to interns specific career field of
choice.
Will I receive academic credit for the project or internship?
Interns interested in pursuing practicum or academic credit for the internship are
responsible for coordinating all requirements with their university or college. The Project YES!
director will work with and provide program information to the intern. It is the intern's
responsibility to provide specific internship credit requirements to their institution/program.
Interns are responsible for any tuition/fees that may be required by their institution.

Do I have to own a car to participate in the project?
It is highly desired that interns own or have ready access to a reliable vehicle that can be
used to fulfill travel requirements. However, there are scenarios in which the lack of a vehicle
may not be a hindrance to the internship. Exceptions are worked on an "as needed" basis.
However, interns must have a valid drivers license and a clean driving record.
Will I be paid for this internship?
Interns receive a stipend for each day spent actively providing youth development
programming.
Do I have to own a computer to participate?
Interns are provided all required equipment and technology needed for the internship.
Will I be traveling alone or in a group?
Every effort is made to assign more than one intern to a weekend event. Since interns are
located throughout the nation, interns will frequently travel individually to the assigned
location. Once there, they meet their fellow interns and then coordinate individual roles and
responsibilities.
When is the application deadline?

Are interns required to purchase specific clothing or uniform items?
Interns are provided a Project YES! nametag upon completion of New Intern Orientation.
Optional clothing items are available for purchase by each intern. Project YES! nametags must
be worn at official Project YES! events.
