b. Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known affix is
added to a known word (e.g., agreeable/disagreeable,
comfortable/uncomfortable, care/careless, heat/preheat).
Unpacked Standard:
Students will need to figure out meanings of words, when prefixes and suffixes are added to words.
They will use root words that they know to help them learn the meaning of new words with the
same root.
They will use print and computer dictionaries to help find the meanings of new words.
The following is a list of the most commonly used prefixes and suffixes, however others may also be taught
Prefixes: un-, re-, mis-, dis-, non
prefixes pre-, mid-, over-, out
prefixes re-, un-, dis-, pre
(unhappy, rewrite, misplace, disobey)
Suffixes -ly, -ful-, -ness, -less
(finally, truly, beautiful, kindness)
Suffixes: adding –ed, -ing, -er, est suffixes –ly, -ful, -ness, -less
