B.W.Y.Pony Club Endurance Newsletter March 2014 Dear All, Here we are at the start of a new season. The weather is improving and everything is drying out. Floyd and Arti (my horses) are really well. Floyd has already completed a 32km and a 40km ride and Arti has finished 10 weeks of slow and lengthy –but never boring- road work which was needed to get him hardened up for the forthcoming season. He is entered for a 40km ride in Lincs on the 30th March and I will make a decision on his future rides after completing this. As far as Pony Club is concerned it was good to see many of you out at the Lightwater ride. You will see from the list below that there is lots organised for this year culminating in the Area qualifier and hopefully the Championships in Cheshire during August. I am hoping that a number of other branches will get involved this year so you will need to make sure that your ponies/horses are really fit. If you are interested the Pony Club has a new training manual out for Endurance (The Pony Club guide to Endurance Riding) which is absolutely brill. It gives you a clear idea on how to get your horses fit, the feed required, the tack to use etc and loads of other really useful hints. It is well worth buying. Our first P.C. Endurance ride is at Thorp Perrow on Thurs 17th April. There will be a rally in the morning and 4km, with easter egg hunt, 8km and 16km rides in the afternoon. This is a really useful training ride and I hope some of our Senior members who have had a go at Endurance over the last few years will help escort the juniors. There will be rosettes and Easter eggs for all who complete successfully. A schedule is attached and can also be found on the BWY website. Please note that those attending the rally in the morning are expected to stay for the ride in the afternoon but it would be useful if you could fill in both a rally application form and also the ride entry form. The Durham and Teeside group of Endurance GB are running a 15km and 30km ride from Richmond Equestrian Centre on Sunday 18th May. For those wishing experience this is a great ride to try. And this all leads up to our Training and Endurance weekend at Clifton Castle (between Bedale and Masham) on Sun 25th May and bank holiday Mon 26th May. On Sunday we will have a whole days training for riders, parents crews and horses. Points we will be discussing; Getting your horse fit; Judging how fit your horse is; Taking the horses heart rate; Understanding speed and rhythm; Feeding the Endurance horse; Crewing; Cooling down your horse after the ride and reducing his heartrate; Other stable management considerations – tack needed, shoeing etc. This day is really important for both children and parents. The fee for this training day is £15 whether a child or an adult. Please apply in writing to Robert Blane at 7, Stoneybrough Lane. Thirsk. YO7 2LS, with names and ages of those attending. To be received by the 17th May. If you require stabling for the night please contact Rachael on 07775 794947. Following on the bank holiday Monday is the Northern Pony Club’s Endurance Challenge with rides of 5, 19, 24, and 33km. A schedule is attached and can also be found on the BWY Pony Club website. This weekend is a must for all interested in Endurance, whether PC members or not. On the 15th June is the Helmsley EGB ride, which some of you did last year. This is one of the best rides in the north, huge wide open spaces with fantastic views. They will be running a Pony Club Interbranch competition for teams and individuals over the 33km track. Schedules will be out in a couple of weeks. Then we move on the highlight of the summer, The Pony Club Area 3 Endurance Qualifier at Queen Marys School, Topcliffe, Thirsk on Sun 13th July. Last year the BWY were really successful. Lets hope for the same again. There will be qualifiers for Juniors-23km, Novices-23km, Intermediates-35km and Open competitors-46km, and there is also a 23km pleasure ride for adults and non PC riders. Schedules out soon. Mon 18th August is the PC Endurance Championships at Cholmoderley Castle in Cheshire. Keep this date clear in your Diary. If you feel Endurance is not for you then you could well be wrong. Come and give it a go. Last year we had members out of our Intermediate Dressage and Eventing teams and the Novice Eventing and Show Jumping teams riding at the PC Endurance championships and I think that all who wish to represent the branch in the Novice, Intermediate or Open eventing teams can prove how fit they are by riding in the Endurance qualifier on the 13th July even if they just compete in the Novice class of 23km. If anyone needs any advice just give me a ring. We can also qualify for the championships by completing three rides of the appropriate difficulty, so if anyone wishes to accompany me at any of the EGB rides I am competing at, then again just give me a ring. Robert B W Y Pony Club Endurance newsletter April 2014 Thorp Perrow Endurance ride. I was really impressed with the riding of members and fitness of the ponies on Thursdays endurance ride. Of the 8km competitors, Emily Worsdale, Kate Sanderson, Hariet Warne, Freddie Pride, Isabella Jones and Eve Radcliffe all had excellent times with Isabella Jones (38 bpm) and Freddie Pride (40 bpm) finishing with nice low heart rates (a sign of the ponies fitness). The stars of the 16km ride were Zaila and Tara Barker of the Hurworth, whose ponies finished with heart rates of 40 and 42 with a speed of 12 kph. Caitlin Birkett (Vale of York) and Ettie Whitworth (BWY) also rode at 12 kph and finished with heart rates of 42 bpm, and the best result was achieved by Sophie Riggs (BWY) whose horse finished with a heart rate of 38 bpm. Excellent heart rates were also achieved by Issie Best, Fenella Hudson, and Ella Sharp but they were just a few minutes slower than the leading competitors.
