The Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust Registered Charity No. 233476 (founded 1964) grant aids
historic churches and chapels of all Christian denominations for repairs and restoration.
The Trust’s main fund-raising is through the Annual Sponsored Ride + Stride event.
Since 1989 this event has raised over £920,000 in the City and County.
HOW THE EVENT WORKS : Cyclists, walkers, horse-riders, runners, joggers and mobility
scooter drivers seek sponsors for the number of churches or chapels they visit on the
event day. Also eligible for sponsorship are Recorders/Welcomers in churches, chapels
and meeting houses for the number of hours on duty.
The money raised by each participant is shared equally between the
Christian church nominated by the sponsored participant, and the Trust. Around 400
Christian places of worship are usually open. Riders and walkers plan their own routes
using the supplied List of Churches and Chapels Open. If you need a list for another
County contact the County Co-ordinator, David Knowles (contact details below).

Remittance Form. The sponsor forms have a column for Gift Aid. The Charity Commission requires
recovered tax to be paid into the Trust account. This increases the amount available for grants.

BEFORE THE DAY

Please publicise the event in your church & community magazines/newsheets and display
the posters.

Distribute sponsorship forms locally.

Arrange a rota of Recorders (who can be sponsored) to welcome and to sign in visitors.

Why not use the day to arrange a working party on the churchyard or a church clean’?

Distribute the Lists of Churches and Chapels Open to all participants.

ON THE DAY
To match the national timing, please open by 10.00am and close at 6.00pm - please
don't disappoint visitors by closing early! If you really have no option, and have to close,
please leave the Register on the door for visitors to sign.
On the Register, write in the name of your Church (otherwise we cannot trace you!)
Ask the Recorders to:
a)
sign the sponsorship forms of the visiting participants.
b)
ask all those visiting to sign the Register of Visitors.
If you are unable to man the Church all day, display the Register of Visitors
at the entrance - with a pen please!
If you are able, please provide soft drinks and biscuits for thirsty visitors.
These are usually offered free of charge, and are much appreciated.
AFTER THE DAY

All participants should collect their own sponsorship money and hand it to you
together with their sponsorship form before the end of October.

You then need to follow one of two alternative methods of sending the money to the
Trust through the RIDE+STRIDE event Honorary Treasurer.
The two alternatives are set out on the enclosed Remittance Form,
BUT to save administration THE PREFERRED METHOD IS BY BANK TRANSFER.
To comply with the Charities Act we have to ask you to pay to the RIDE+STRIDE Treasurer ALL THE MONEY
raised. We will promptly return half to you.

HOW THE MONEY IS USED Half of the money raised goes directly to the Christian Church,
Chapel or Meeting House of the participant’s choice and half to the Trust for distribution as grants.
