Western Civilization II Spring 2014 Instructor: Dr Kevin Herlihy E-Mail: kevin.herlihy@ucf.edu Class Code: EUH 2001.0005 Class Meeting Times: Tuesday & Thursday 9:00-10:15 Office Hours Tuesday & Thursday 9:00 - 10:15 Room 524, Colbourn Hall Attendance There is an attendance policy and may not miss more than four classes or you will receive an F for failure to attend. However, if you do miss a class you are responsible for finding out if any changes have taken place in assignments. You can do so in two ways. One, ask one of your classmates or ask me at my office hours. Please do not ask me during class time. Also, if you are late and this causes you to miss a quiz or another assignment you will have to use this as your dropped assignment. Missing quizzes due to funerals, car accidents, travel, sickness or any other problem is provided for with your dropped quiz. You need not contact me to let me know you are going to be absent. There are no make up quizzes or assignments. Conduct Please do not text or instant message in class. It is distracting to you and also your classmates. Any type of digital device that is out during a quiz will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade for the class. Plagiarism or any other type of cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade for the class. Lateness Please be seated and ready for class at the appointed time. If you happen to be late please sit in a place close to the door so that your late entrance does not disrupt the class. Also, being late for your reading quiz and one-minute essays will adversely effect your final grade. Book You will need one book for this course. Joshua Cole et.al. Western Civilizations: Their History & Their Culture Brief third edition, vol. 2. ISBN 978-0-393-93489-2. Assignment & Quizzes There will be either a reading quiz or a short essay on every class day. If there is a quiz on the reading assignment it will consist of five true/false questions. You may use notes during the reading quiz. The final grade on your quizzes will be either 0, 70, 80 or 100. After dropping one quiz the cumulative average will determine your final quiz grade. If your quiz average is below 60 you will receive a 0 for your final quiz grade. If you fail more than four quizzes you will also fail the course. If your average is above passing (60) you will receive a final quiz grade of 70. If your average is 70 or above your final grade quiz will be 80, If your final quiz grade is 80 or above you will receive a final quiz grade of 100. The short essay is a ‘one-minute’ essay. In this exercise you provide a short answer covering a subject or topic we covered in the class during the prior three lecturers. Grading for the one-minute essay is the same as the reading quizzes. You should stay on top of where you are in the class at all times by keeping all of your class work such as reading quizzes, short essays and examinations and keeping track of the results of these assignments. Lectures Each week will be devoted to the specific topics. The lectures and the reading assignments are very distinct from one another. It is important to know that the lecture will be of no use in doing the quizzes from the book. However, to get the most out of the lectures it is highly recommended that you have the reading assignment read before we begin a topic. My lectures are interactive. This means that I ask questions as the lecture proceeds to make sure everything is clear and everyone understands what is being stated. Therefore, if you’ve read the assignment you will be able to ask intelligent questions during class and do better on your examinations and short essays. You should also be taking good notes during class because your examination answers should show an ability to integrate lectures and reading assignments. It is important that you get a good grasp of the factual material. Without a good grasp of the factual material you will not be able to write an effective and interesting essay. Exams Your mid-term exam will be on 13 February. Your mid-term exam will be comprised of three essay questions. To answer the questions adequately you should have a good understanding of the lectures and the reading assignments. Although the essay questions will be specific to the topic you should have a good understanding of the topics from the other weeks. You will have to post these questions online at www.turnitin.com. You may only use your knight’s e-mail for this website. The class id number is 7338436 and the password is 0005 (your section number) You must follow the directions on the website. Failure to follow the directions could result in failing the course. The final exam will also be uploaded on to www.turnitin.com and the directions need to be followed here as well. The final exam be comprised of five essay questions. Each student must answer a mandatory question and choose another question. Each question will be of equal value.. There will be a short review of the examinations beforehand. Final Grade Your final grade will be determined by the collective results of your mid-term (20%) and final exams (30%) which together comprise 50% of your grade; and the highest grades of your reading assignments quizzes will comprise 40%. Finally 10% will be comprised of your one-minute essays. Grades will be given in the following form: A = 100-93; A- = 92-90; B+ = 89-87; B = 86-83; B- = 82-80; C+ = 79-77; C = 76-73; C- = 72-70; D+ = 69-67; D = 66-60; F = below 60. Please, it is very important that you retain all your quizzes, essays and exams as mistakes can be made totaling your final grade.
