The University of South Wales is currently seeking an Apprentice Technician to contribute to the provision of technical
support in the Chemistry and Forensic science laboratories.
The postholder will be trained in a range of techniques that will support teaching and projects in Chemistry and Forensic
laboratories.
As a member of a large technical team the post holder will work with technical staff providing support and assistance to
both staff and students.
This position is based at the Upper Glyntaff campus of the University of South Wales
The terms and conditions of the post (including grade and salary) will be those of the University of South
Wales.

DEPARTMENT:
Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science
Responsible to:
Principal Technical Officer
Main Purpose of Job:
The post holder will undertake an Apprenticeship programme in Chemistry during which time s/he will become fully
conversant with the workings of chemical/scientific equipment and able to provide technical support required within the
chemical sciences environment.
During the apprenticeship programme the apprentice will become proficient in the use of a wide range of chemical
instrumentation and disciplines found in a scientific laboratory, progressing to advanced technological equipment.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties:
 Assist technical staff in the Chemistry/Forensic science laboratories.
 Assist senior technical officers in laboratory preparations.
 Assist teaching demonstrations, research and consultancy.
 Assist technical staff to carry out routine and general maintenance of instrumentation/ equipment.
 Perform any other duties which are commensurate with the post as directed by Principal Technical Officer.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Essential
 Good communication skills
 Ability to work independently or as part of team
 IT Literate
KNOWLEDGE
Essential
 Basic knowledge of chemistry/scientific equipment
and apparatus.
EXPERIENCE
Essential
 Experience of working in a scientific laboratory.
TRAINING
Essential
 5 GCSEs at grade C or above to include Mathematics
and English or equivalent qualifications/experience.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Essential
 Flexible approach to working hours
 A helpful and courteous attitude
 Adaptable and prepared to undertake a variety of
tasks.
 Good organisational skills
Desirable
 Experience in the use of Microsoft Office Suite

 Ability to recognise different chemistry
instrumentation/equipment and their usage.
 Hands on experience in practical chemistry.
