Washington County Schools Commander Day Lesson Plans 2015-16 Commander Day Lessons focus on the review and application of skills that students have previously learned. Students will submit a work product or learning log to demonstrate completion of a lesson. Student work must be submitted no later than two days following the return from the Commander Day. Content Area: __Family and Consumer Sciences__________________ Grade Level: ___10 -12__________________ Snow Day Lesson Number: 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9 - 10 Content Topic: Cooking Show Standard(s): AA006 -Utilize effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills AC0001- Utilize critical-thinking skills to determine best options/outcomes (e.g., analyze reliable/unreliable sources of information, use previous experiences, implement crisis management, develop contingency planning) AA003 -Demonstrate competence in writing and editing documents, using correct grammar, and punctuation AB005-Demonstrate competence in organizing, writing, and editing using correct vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and punctuation Essential Question (Students should be able to answer following the lesson): What is an issue that children need more information about? How do you create a story that catches a child’s attention? What are some lessons that you can address in your story that relate to either physical, social, emotional, or intellectual development? Critical Vocabulary (Terminology to be included in the lesson): Physical Development, Social Development, Emotional Development, Intellectual Development, Critical Issue, Problem Solving, Milestones, Illustrations Learning Activities and Steps (Work students will complete): Students who choose this project will be able to use this for two commander days. Day one – Select a topic and make an outline and do any other prewriting activities necessary to complete the book. Day two – write the book and draw illustrations. Technology Activity Option (Students may choose to complete in place of other activity): Does not require technology. But student may create their story using the computer if they choose.
