“Find the Power of the Hour”
I, ________________________________, hereby pledge to utilize Power Hour to its
fullest potential. I understand the impact proper use of Power Hour will have on
my academic progress during the 2015-2016 school year. I understand that ½
hour of the 1 hour Power Hour time is to be used to participate in tutoring,
academic intervention, or club activities. Although I will enjoy my ½ hour lunch
time, I will commit to using the other ½ of my Power Hour time to improve my
grades, make up missing assignments, seek out help with difficult courses, and
enrich my high school experience through participation in clubs and activities.

Why are grades important?
Grades can be a wonderful way to measure progress in courses, but they can also be
frustrating when they do not truly reflect your abilities. Some students care greatly about the
grades they make in courses, while other students don’t associate good grades with
achievement. Although there are times that grades do not accurately reflect learning, most
of the time grades are a MIRROR of our personal effort. There are many reasons grades are
important, here are just a few:








Grades are meant to measure what you have learned in a course
Grades provide motivation, especially when you want to be the best
They are used to evaluate students for scholarships
Grades (GPA) is used to determine eligibility for high school sports, dual enrollment and
interdisciplinary competitions
They are evaluated for college admission or admission into specific programs (ex.
Nursing school)
They are used to determine a student’s eligibility to play college sports or get sports
scholarships
Grades give employers an indication of your work ethic and motivation
Grades represent your academic record and how you spent your time in high school

Why must I do homework?
This is a question asked by students around the globe, but have you ever stopped to
consider the true meaning of homework? Contrary to your beliefs, homework is not a
punishment or an evil plot to take over your free time. Homework serves a specific purpose;
to enhance learning and reinforce what has been taught in the classroom. In a meta-study
conducted in 1989, by Duke University, it was found that high schoolers have much to gain
academically by doing their homework. The average high school student doing homework
outperformed 69% of the students in a class with no homework (Greatschools.org). So how
successful have you been doing homework, what pitfalls have you encountered, and what
support do you need for homework success?

you will add to your routine):

Find a quiet place with adequate lighting
Organize your workspace
Set a timer and work in 20 minute intervals
Use sites such as Khan Academy for academic help
Get the phone numbers of at least two classmates and “Phone a Friend” for help
Use an academic planner or electronic planner to log assignments
Have a single homework folder to place completed assignments
Try to start homework before 8 p.m. (if possible) this will allow you to get your assignments done and get
to bed on time. Sleep is essential for good health!
When doing long term assignments, do 15 to 20 minutes of work each day
Use Power Hour to complete assignments that may require the help of a teacher

What Can I Do To Get Motivated?
Everyone struggles from time to time getting motivated. Sometimes it is something as simple
as cleaning your room or working out. When motivation keeps you from attaining your
academic goals, the consequences can be serious. Here are some helpful tips on getting
motivated:
1. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals and work to attain them.
2. Establish rewards for progress toward your goals.
3. Expect set-backs and when they happen, re-direct and renew your energy toward your
goals. Don’t give up.
4. Use the power of positive thinking and believe in yourself. Overcome discouragement.
5. Tell others what you are trying to accomplish and seek support from loved ones, teachers,
school counselors, and friends.
6. Learn to say no to options and distractions that deter you from your goal. Obstacles are
what you see when you take your eyes off the goal.
7. Establish routine and regular exercise; meditation, prayer or yoga, even if it is only 15
minutes a day to start. This will help you to cultivate discipline.
8. Use positive imagery to help you achieve your goals. Imagine yourself as you will be and
feel when your goal is achieved.
9. Spend time reflecting or talking to others about what has stopped you from achieving your
goals in the past.
10. Post reminders and inspirational quotes in prominent places about what you want to
achieve.
11. Get professional help and support to overcome physical or mental roadblocks (depression
and anxiety are just two examples) and to bolster your efforts, no matter how small they
may seem.
12. Practice extreme self-care. Good health is essential to positive thinking and feeling, which
will take you a long way toward achieving your goals.
Motivational Plan: Choose two (2) motivational tips from the list above and commit to doing
them each day for 1 week. Write down the two tips you have chosen.

10 Tips For Handling a Difficult Class
We've all been there: It's the first day of class and you already feel lost. Maybe the subject
matter is out of your comfort zone, or it's an exceptionally advanced class. Either way, the
coursework is hard and you're going to need some tools to handle the pressure. Don't miss
these tips for tackling difficult high school classes.
 Know What Lies Ahead- You can reduce your stress significantly by knowing what
you're up against ahead of time. Carefully review the syllabus and your teacher’s Edline
page so you're not surprised by any of the materials. One of the realities of hard classes
is that they take extra effort, focus and time. Be prepared to spend more time on these
classes than others - which could mean staying in on the weekends or turning down
invitations to social events.
 Plan Your Term- As you review the syllabus, start determining which topics will be the
most challenging for you, then map out a study plan for the whole term. Set small daily
and weekly goals, and give yourself extra time for the hardest readings and assignments.
If you divide the work into doable chunks, you'll find that the parts aren't nearly as
overwhelming as the whole.
 Refine Your Study Habits- Maybe you haven't had a difficult course before, or you're a
natural student who doesn't often struggle with schoolwork. Either way, many students
cruise through their middle school careers with bad study habits. Now that you're
confronting a hard class, it's time for you to whip your study strategies into shape. Get
and use a daily planner. Set aside time for reading, writing and other coursework each
day, and give yourself rewards. Did you meet your daily study goals before dinner? Go
grab some sunshine and social time during Power Hour.
 Go to Class- Missing class is not a good idea, but attendance is imperative for a class you
find challenging. By not going to class you may miss out on notes and practice, both of
which may include important information for exams. Attending each class is an
important step for success in your most difficult courses.
 Meet with Your Teacher- Find out when your teacher has Power Hour, and make the
effort to meet with him or her during that time. Tell the teacher what you find
challenging about the course, and ask if he or she has any tips for helping you
understand the more difficult material. Just knowing that there are students struggling
with some of the material may help the teacher adjust the pace of the course. If you're
having trouble understanding the teacher in class, it may also help to specify which
aspects of his or her teaching strategy aren't working for you. Be very polite, but don't
be afraid to offer constructive criticism - you may find yourself helping the entire class
by speaking up.

 Form a Study Group- If you find a class exceptionally difficult, chances are other
students do, too - but you can help each other. When you study with a group, you gain
insights from students who understand some of your problem areas, and you can help
others with the material you're comfortable with in return. Just be careful to always
turn in your own work and avoid violating any course rules. Many teachers allow
students to study together but ask that you complete individual assignments on your
own. Use Power Hour to meet in your group.
 Participate in Power Hour- Bayside offers learning and tutoring, through Power Hour,
providing students with additional academic support. Find out when and where you can
get help with your coursework, and make it a point to show up at least twice a week.
Even if you just sit there by yourself finishing your homework, you'll find that simply
knowing there's help a few feet away will make things a lot less frustrating.
 Seek Outside Help- Maybe you can't make your learning center hours, or there just isn't
a tutor who can help with your work. For some college students, outside tutoring can be
a lifesaver. Look on your college bulletin boards for professional services, or put out a
request for help on your school's job listings - you never know who might be able to
help. Just be aware that private tutoring can be expensive and isn't typically covered by
financial aid.
 Lighten Your Load- We all have moments in life where we've bitten off more than we
can chew. Even if you can't drop your most difficult course, consider revising your work
schedule or cutting back on some activities. Your stress may only be temporary, so
make sure to communicate your stress with parent, coaches, and teachers. They may
be able to offer so solutions.
 Fight Stress- Sometimes we make things harder on ourselves simply by worrying about
them. It's important to take some time for yourself to reduce your stress level and gain
perspective on your workload. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating well and
making time for social activities.

HELP…….GET ME ORGANIZED!
Your success in high school can greatly be improved by being organized and using your
time wisely. Staying organized can help ease the burden of a busy schedule. While you
probably do not have a lot of control over when your classes are scheduled, you do have
control of the rest of your time. Here are some important tips to remember. Highlight three
strategies to try for 3 weeks.
1. Use your school planner to stay organized. Fill in things you must do (classes, work,
practice, etc. that you can't change). Write down appointments and class assignments.
Make a daily checklist. Set priorities. Do the most important tasks first.
2. Set achievable S.M.A.R.T. goals. When you set goal that are unrealistic it sets you up for
failure. You want to aim to set goals that are difficult, yet are achievable.
3. Organize some key areas in your life, for example your bedroom, study area, car, etc. By
organizing these key areas it will improve your ability to stay on schedule and stay focused
during your hectic schedule. Being unorganized will cause problems in nearly every area of
your life and developing the skill of organization will immensely improve your ability to
become successful at whatever you pursue.
4. Schedule the most difficult tasks for times when you are alert. Geometry, for example
may be hard enough when you're fresh. When you're tired, it will be impossible!
5. Establish a regular time and place for study. Utilize this space to study afterschool.
6. Utilize your Power Hour. Focus on your assignments and to do list in your planner.
7. Use daylight hours to study whenever possible. For most students for every hour of
study done in daylight hours, it will take them one and a half hours to do the same task at
night. Study during the day especially during Power Hour.
8. By using flash cards, summary sheets or your notes, you can use short periods to study
on your spare time while you're waiting for class to start or for a friend to pick you up.
9. Take study breaks. Do not schedule a night before test cram session. Several short 20
minutes sessions are more effective than one long session.
10. Review Your Notes Every Day. You'll reinforce what you've learned, so you need
less time to study. You'll also be ready if your teacher calls on you or gives a pop quiz.
11. Prepare and organize whatever possible the night before. A few examples would be
to pack your book bag and lay out what you intend to wear the next day.
12. Get a Good Night's Sleep. Running on empty makes your days seem longer and your
tasks seem more difficult.
