George Gordon Meade By: Seth In 1861 the Civil War started. One main person was George Gordon Meade. He became brigadier general and fought against Robert E. Lee. George fought in the second battle Bull Run. George Meade at first wanted to build lighthouses for the army. But he was promoted to a brigadier general and fought in the Civil War (New Book of Knowledge). First, General Meade was born on Dec 31, 1815 in Spain. He got his education in Mount Hope Institution in Baltimore. His father was in the army which made George want to be in the army (World Biography). He was a boy in robust health. His family was poor but he loved them (Dictionary 474). George made some accomplishments in the war. He fought in the Mexican War and was promoted in the civil war. On June 28, during the civil war he was named commander of the army George Gordon Meade Page 1 (New Book of Knowledge). He left the war to see his family. Abraham Lincoln appointed George the general (Compton). Abraham Lincoln criticized George for releasing Robert E. Lee (Hassler). Later, George Meade forced back the Confederacy (The New Book of Knowledge). In later life George Gordon Meade died. He died on Nov 6, 1872 in Philadelphia. He is remembered as an old American hero who helped win the Civil War. Even though some people still criticize him for the escaping of Robert E. Lee, people still honor him through monuments around the world (Encyclopedia of World Biography). In conclusion, George Meade was famous for being a general. He won many battles and the Civil War might not be the same without him. People honor him throughout the world in monuments, museums, and stores.
