Luke 3:16
Baptism of Our Lord
January 10, 2016
8:30 A.M. and 11:00 A.M.
The Baptism of Our Lord cannot help but recall our own and all baptismal blessings.
We recall and celebrate our adoption as daughters and sons, the gift of the Holy
Spirit, and the promised company of almighty God when we “pass through the
waters . . . the rivers . . . fire.” On this day the heavens open again, for this assembly,
and we receive the gift of the beloved Son of God in bread and wine.

OPENING VOLUNTARY Christ, When for Us You Were Baptized
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
Dieterich Buxtehude
Stand. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.
In the name of the Father,
and of the + Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hid:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
2
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin
and cannot free ourselves.
We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,
so that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name.
Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy,
loved us even when we were dead in sin,
and made us alive together with Christ.
By grace we have been saved.
In the name of + Jesus Christ,
our sins are forgiven.
Almighty God strengthen us with power through the Holy Spirit,
that Christ may live in our hearts through faith.
Amen.
The assembly turns to face the cross as it enters the sanctuary, following the cross as we have followed Jesus into this holy
place and time of corporate worship.
GATHERING HYMN 449 We Know that Christ Is Raised
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE
Emily Norris
FIRST READING Isaiah 43:1-7
But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you
pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm
you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume
you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your
ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and
honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life.
Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I
will gather you; I will say to the north, “Give them up,” and to the south, “Do not withhold;
bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth— everyone who is
called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
The word of the Lord. The assembly responds: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 29 Sung by the choir
Henry G. Ley
Ascribe to the LORD, you gods,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due God’s name;
worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders;
the LORD is upon the mighty waters.
The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice;
the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor.
The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees;
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
The LORD makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.
The voice of the LORD
splits the flames of fire;
The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare.
And in the temple of the LORD all are crying, “Glory!”
The LORD sits enthroned above the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forevermore.
The LORD shall give strength to his people;
the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace.
SECOND READING Acts 8:14-17
Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they
sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might
receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only
been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them,
and they received the Holy Spirit.
The word of the Lord. The assembly responds: Thanks be to God.
Stand.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
GOSPEL Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
The holy gospel according to Saint Luke.
As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts
concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I
baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to
untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His
winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his
granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Now when all the people were
baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was
opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice
came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
The gospel of the Lord.

The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.
The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace, and may say Peace be with you or similar words.
Please be considerate of those who may be reluctant to shake hands in this flu season.

OFFERING
OFFERTORY ANTHEM (8:30) The Baptism of Our Lord
Charles Callahan
From wilderness to Jordan came The final Prophet to proclaim
That judgment soon was to begin To punish Israel for their sin.
Although of Abraham’s descent, Since all have sinned, all must repent,
And, like the Gentiles, undergo A baptism, and its import show.
But when Christ came, no judgment dire Did he pronounce with venging fire;
Himself the baptism underwent, The sinless, perfect penitent.
On him the Spirit as a dove Descended, and the Father’s love
Voiced his approval that the Son Mankind’s salvation had begun.
All glory, Lord, to you we pay For your Epiphany today;
And to the Father tribute bring, As by the Spirit here we sing.
OFFERTORY ANTHEM (11:00) The Baptism of Christ
Peter Hallock
Jesus autem hodie regressus est a Jordane.
[But Jesus has today returned from the Jordan.]
When Jesus Christ baptized was, the Holy Ghost descended with grace;
The Father’s voice was heard in the place.
Refrain: Hic est filius meus, ipsum intende. [This is my son, listen to him.]
There were Three Persons and one Lord, the Son baptized with one accord,
the Father said this blessed word:

Now, Jesu, as thou art both God and man, and were baptized in the Jordan,
at our last end, we pray thee, say then:

OFFERTORY HYMN
Let us pray.
Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things.
Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts:
our selves, our time, and our possessions.
Use us, and what we have gathered,
in feeding the world with your love,
through the one who gave himself for us,
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy . . . we praise your name and join their unending
hymn:
SANCTUS
12
In the night in which he was betrayed…do this for the remembrance of me.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Announcements
WELCOME all visitors to the Lord’s house this day! The people and pastors of Augsburg Lutheran
Church are happy you have chosen to worship here. We welcome you into the body of Christ and
into the mission we all share in giving thanks and praise to God. We invite you to fill out the
Friendship Register found on each pew. Visitors, please ask one of the pastors to direct you to the
Visitor’s Welcoming Table for a loaf of homemade bread and printed information about this
congregation.
Our worship begins with an acclamation or a brief piece sung by the choir which introduces
the Gospel message or another theme of the day, followed by a voluntary or prelude. This is a
time to quietly begin our worship in ways that are meaningful to us, through listening, prayer,
meditation on the scriptures to be read, the hymns or anthems to be sung, the art and paragraph
on the cover of the bulletin, or to simply still our minds and spirits in preparation for an hour
that is different from the hectic life outside the doors of our sanctuary.
The altar flowers today are given to the glory of God in loving memory of Russell, Mildred,
Bonnie and Larry by Nell Rose and her family.
On the center aisle of each pew is a folder known as the “Friendship Register.” Please sign
the register and check if you are communing today. Be sure to review the sheet to identify visitors.
Please hand the completed pages from the register to an usher during the singing of the Hymn of
the Day.
We offer Infant and Toddler Nurseries during the service. If you would like to use the
nursery, please ask an usher for directions.
If you would like to add or remove a name from the Prayer List, please call Cindy McManus
in the church office at 722-8144 or email her at augsburgpublications@gmail.com.

Our 2016 Pictorial Directory and You
Our new church pictorial directory is underway and we need to have everyone participate by
getting their photo taken. Our selected vendor, Color Craft, has worked with us to develop a
great program for Augsburg which includes a free 8” X 10 portrait (no purchase necessary) for
participants, a new printed directory and a free mobile directory for your electronic devices. We
hope to distribute the new directories in May.
For the next two Sundays – 1/10 & 1/17  sign-up sheets will be available in the lobby next to
the Gathering Room for you to sign up for your photo session. The dates of the photo sessions
here at Augsburg are Thursday, 2/4, Friday, 2/5, and Saturday, 2/6. You can also secure an
appointment yourself by calling Color Craft direct at: 800.638.9107, ext. 229. Check your
calendars now and support Augsburg and your fellow members by participating in this new

Mary’s Ministries Circle Meeting will be held Tuesday, January 12 at 10:30 A.M. in the
Lounge. All are welcome.
The Efird L. and Maria F. Hine Fund. The general purpose and intent of the Efird L. and
Maria F. Hine Fund is to “put into effect a ministry of Christian mercy and concern in meeting
human needs as the Church thinks Jesus Christ Himself would have them met.” All requests
for financial grants should be directed to The Hine Fund and should be in the church office no
later than 12 noon on Wednesday, January 20. The committee will meet for its Winter Quarter
meeting on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 7:30 pm. Agendas will be ready for members to pick
up in the Work Room on Sunday, January 24. Please call or email the Hine Fund secretary if you
are unable to attend the meeting.
Love One Another As I Have Loved You. In John 15:12, Jesus says, “This is my
commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Loving and caring for one
another is not just the pastor’s job—it’s something Jesus calls us all to do! Stephen Ministry is a
ministry in which people with special gifts for caring ministry can put those gifts to use in an
organized way, bringing Jesus’ love and care to those who most need it. If you, or someone you
know, are going through a difficult time please contact one of the pastors or Kathy Nelson, our
referrals coordinator, about Stephen Ministry. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide you
with focused, confidential, one-to-one Christian care and to help you experience the healing
power of Christ’s love in your life.
