Doncaster Council Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) Frequently asked questions Who can use the HWRCs? The six HWRCs in Doncaster are provided for the recycling and disposal of household waste from DONCASTER RESIDENTS ONLY. Business, trade or commercial waste cannot be deposited on any HWRC in Doncaster. All waste must be separated before you arrive on site to ensure as much waste as possible can be recycled. Where can I go to recycle waste that isn’t collected at the kerbside? There are six HWRCs across the Borough which provides a wide range of recycling facilities. In addition to being able to deposit recyclable materials at these six sites, Doncaster residents can take household waste that has been generated in their own home, free of charge, to a HWRC for safe and responsible disposal. Armthorpe HWRC is open 7 days a week from 8:30am to 7pm all year round. The other five sites are as follows: Balby, Carcroft and Rossington are all closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays Conisbrough and Hatfield are both closed on Thursdays and Fridays Summer opening times: 1st April – 30th September open from 9:30am to 7pm Winter opening times: 1st October - 31st March open from 9:30am to 5:30pm ***ALL SITES ARE CLOSED ON 25th & 26th DECEMBER AND 1st JANUARY*** What vehicle can I use to access a HWRC? Private/domestic cars owned by Doncaster residents are allowed access to the HWRCs without a permit Cars towing trailers must display a valid access permit Commercial vehicles (vans, crew cabs etc.) must display a valid access permit. Those over 6ft/1.83m high can only access Armthorpe HWRC 4x4 pick-ups and 4x4 vehicles without rear side windows or seats in the back must display a valid access permit Under Council policy (since June 2001) sign written commercial vehicles are banned from all 6 sites Access permits are only available to Doncaster residents and are free of charge How can I obtain a permit? Permit applications can be made by telephoning the Council on (01302)736000 By email to General.Enquiries@doncaster.gov.uk Online at www.doncaster.gov.uk/hwrc In person at the Civic Building, Waterdale, Doncaster DN1 3BU Please note that we will only be able to issue your permit when we have received a completed application form and copies of: Your vehicle registration document (log book) and A recent utility bill (gas, electric, water ,Council tax) What are the permit rules and regulations? To obtain a HWRC permit you must be a resident of Doncaster and adhere to the following terms and conditions: 1. Permits allow the disposal of household waste only. Anyone found to be disposing of trade/commercial waste will have their permit withdrawn. 2. Permits are not transferable and are only valid for the vehicle and site indicated on your application form (unless your nominated site is closed on the day you wish to visit, then it is recommended that you use Armthorpe HWRC). 3. Sign written vehicles are not permitted access to any site. 4. Hire vehicles are only allowed to visit Armthorpe HWRC on a one-off tip basis and visits must be arranged beforehand by phoning (01302)736000. All such visits are at the discretion of the Waste & Recycling Team. 5. The permit must be displayed in the vehicle windscreen or access to site will be refused. 6. The permit is valid for 2 years. However if your vehicle or address details change in that time you must advise the Council immediately. Where can I take large items of rubbish, garden waste, rubble etc.? Limited items of these items can be taken to a HWRC, for example: If you have a large garden and don’t compost your garden waste or don’t have enough room in your green wheeled bin. You’ve been working on a small DIY project in your own homes, such as changing a door or removing a garden fence. If you have large quantities of this type of material to dispose of, it is recommended that you consider hiring a skip. What items can I recycle at the HWRCs? The following list indicates which materials can be recycled at the HWRCs: Asbestos – small quantities correctly wrapped at Armthorpe only Batteries – car & household Cans, tins & foil Cardboard Chipboard Cooking oil Electrical items Fluorescent tubes & energy saving bulbs Fridges & freezers (CFCs) Glass bottles Hardcore/rubble – small quantities from household DIY projects only Hard plastic (garden chairs ,childrens toys) – except Hatfield & Conisbrough Ink cartridges LP gas cylinders – except Hatfield & Conisbrough Non-ferrous metals Engine oil Paper Plastic bottles Plasterboard – small quantities of clean plasterboard at Armthorpe only Scrap metal Shoes Textiles Tetra packs Tyres – car & motorbike tyres not on rims Wood Am I allowed to walk on to site to deposit waste? Not without a valid Pedestrian Permit and not without prior arrangement with the site. HWRCs can be dangerous places so health & safety regulations are in place to protect both residents and site staff. I would like pedestrian access on to a HWRC, how do I get a permit? Householders living within the same parish or village as a HWRC (provided they live no more than 1mile from the site), who do not have access to a vehicle or choose not to use a vehicle to access site, can apply for a pedestrian permit. What are the rules and regulations of a pedestrian permit? Each time you wish to use your pedestrian permit you must: Contact the site you hold the permit for and advise them of the time you wish to visit On arrival at site please wait at the site entrance gate for a member of staff to accompany you on to site Follow all instructions given by the site staff until you are accompanied from site at the end of your visit What happens if I do not live within the same parish as a HWRC but would like pedestrian access to a site?
