My interest for mathematics began the first day I could count. Whether my class was long division in the fourth grade, pre-algebra in middle school, or calculus in high school, I have always looked forward to it. Now having been introduced to the field of accounting, I know what career my interest can lead me to. Accounting was also something I looked forward to and it was also something that I could count on for the future. Choosing a College: With the state of Kentucky offering KEES money for every “A” I receive, going to a college in Kentucky is an important factor in picking my college. Murray State University, the university in my hometown, is a great option for college for me. Not only does it have a great accounting department, but it also is right at home giving me a chance to get comfortable in the new college environment. The University of Kentucky, however, is also a good option. According to its website, It offers a full program called the Gatton College of Business and Economics that is dedicated strictly to the business and accounting world. It can be a progression of years, like a war, or it can happen in a matter of seconds, like an assassination. But most importantly it alters lives. For many African Americans, three marches altered not only their lives, but the lives of everyone in America. These three marches changed our country for the better and shaped history in a way that is unforgettable. The first march happened in early 1963. It is known as the Detroit Walk to Freedom. The most intense violence due to inequality of people happened in 1943. Although it had been twenty years prior to the incident, The Detroit Council for Human Rights declared there be a “Walk to Freedom.” They believed the basic ideas and causes from the 1940s were still going on in that day. The walk happened on June 23, 1963, led by the one and only Martin Luther King Jr. 125,000 people stood by his side as they marched down Woodward Avenue ending at Cobo Hall. This sight is where King gave his famous speech, “I Have a Dream” for the first time. This changed not only African American history but American history as well because it wasn’t just one man who believed in civil rights, it was a whole city. This showed America that people will stand and fight for what is right. The second march happened in that same year. It was called the March on Washington. On August 28, 1963, over 2,000 buses, 21 trains, and 10 airplanes all joined with thousands of people at the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. The march ended at Lincoln Memorial where speeches were given. The most significant part was that the march was 80% African Americans and the other 20% were whites and other Award Winning Essay P a g e | 16 ethnic groups. This showed America that whites and African Americans can come together and be equal. This was a big step in the Civil Rights Movement. The last and final big step was the Selma to Montgomery March. This consisted of three marches that were all in 1965. The first march was called “Bloody Sunday.” It was stopped by state troopers on Edmund Pettus Bridge where violence broke out and several marchers were severely hurt. The second march was similar, except when they got to the bridge, they stopped when ordered, said a prayer, and turned back to Selma. The night of the march, three white ministers who joined it were killed. There was a controversy about how the media paid attention to the death of a white man as opposed to an African American. The third march made it all the way to Montgomery due to the first amendments right to assemble. These final marches opened the eyes of Americans. It made them realize that this wasn’t just a movement but had become a battle that was unfair and needed to be justified. These three marches have caused grief and death but also caused America to realize that no matter the skin color, everyone is equal. It changed America and African Americans. Equality has been honored since these marches and continues to be honored. February is a month of reflection as we look back on African American history and learn from our mistakes but build off of the lessons learned. The three marches shaped history for the better. FBLA National Conference Trip The FBLA National Conference was held at Washington D.C. in November of 2010. I got the chance to visit our capital city as well as learn more about business and leadership skills. The history that filled D.C. was inspiring and very educational. I couldn’t get enough of it! We toured the main aspects of the city within two days, equivalent to reading half of a United States history textbook. The conference was beneficial, with great speakers, workshops, and chances to meet students like myself from all over the nation. I learned to “break barriers” and be a leader and encourager among my peers and classmates. It was a very worthwhile trip! This is our entire group from FBLA that traveled to Washington D.C.
