Information Systems Manager
2-year Contract
Do you want to make a change to make a difference? Amnesty International is a global movement of
people fighting injustice and promoting human rights. We are seeking our first dedicated Information
Systems (IS) Manager to develop and implement a host of IS initiatives designed specifically to support
and enhance the attainment of our mission.
The IS Manager will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective performance of AIC’s
information technology systems, data management functions and associated support services.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the IS Manager will work in partnership with program units
to assess the key needs, current challenges and prioritize and execute data technology initiatives to
directly support AIC priorities.
This role will be charged with integrating data and technology into organizational processes,
maintaining and improving the existing database and manipulation tools while charting and redefining
the role and core IT services delivered across the organization.
The IS Manager will ensure that AIC’s information systems and infrastructure are adequately
maintained, supported and optimized. In addition, he/she will ensure that the supporter database
operates effectively and is able to support current and anticipated mission critical functions.
The IS Manager will be a hands-on leadership role. The successful candidate must demonstrate proven
experience in business and system analysis, information resources management, project management,
and must possess strong leadership, technology, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
The IS Manager will be responsible for leading and developing the Information Systems team to
achieve these objectives.
Responsibilities:
Governance and Management
 Lead members of the Information Systems Team, including providing direction, feedback,
coaching/mentoring, and development continuously on an informal and formal basis;
 Build relationships and provide exceptional service and support to internal stakeholders;
 Develop and oversee the implementation of AIC’s information systems strategy and
operational plan;
 Set and manage the annual IS budget to support the operational plan;
 Provide expertise and advice to the management team to support decision making regarding
information technologies and systems;
 Oversee the development and application of consistent and effective information and
technology related policies, procedure, guidelines, and standards; and
 Approve and monitor IS priorities, standards, procedures, policies, and overall performance.
Infrastructure Effectiveness and Alignment
 Scrutinize current infrastructure, processes and expenditures to identify optimization
opportunities;
 Collaborate with Information Systems Team members to manage AIC’s information systems,
digital platforms, and communications infrastructure, including: local area networks, wide area
networks, email, web systems, system hardware/software, and security systems;
 Oversee the management and optimization of the web technology infrastructure to support
content development, distribution, communication, engagement, activism and fundraising
needs of AIC; and
 Research and investigate information technology and information systems that will advance
online activism and increase the effectiveness of AIC’s business processes.
Manage Organizational Information and Data Systems
 Manage and oversee all technical aspects of corporate and program specific databases,
processes, and systems;
 Based on program driven needs, integrate and manage supporter data originating from
multiple sources (including internal, AIC website, and 3rd party) into the AIC supporter
database;
 Develop/refine/ manage tools and processes to enable extraction, transformation, and loading
processes from multiple sources to the AIC supporter database;
 Collaborate with program unit staff to identify reporting requirements and provide an
integrated reporting environment to support analytics and self-service reporting;
 Oversee the optimization of data integrity via standardization, cleaning, data repair, matching,
and de-duping;
 Oversee integration and training of new and existing staff on database tools; and
 Collaborate with other Amnesty sections on joint technology opportunities.
Requirements:







Degree, diploma and/or certification(s) in a relevant field (IT, Information Systems, Computer
Science etc.);
Minimum of 4 years of experience in leading a team in the provision of corporate IT services and
management of information systems and supporting IT infrastructure;
Minimum of 5 years of experience in database design/management/administration and in the
development/application of ETL tools and processes;
Demonstrated ability in leading, motivating and developing an IT team to achieve
organizational goals;
Experience working in a not-for-profit or charitable environment an asset;
Demonstrated experience in data warehousing and/or business intelligence;
Demonstrated experience with client relationship management or donor relationship systems,
preferably in a not-for-profit environment;









Strong Microsoft SQL skills;
Experience with PHP / MySQL;
Knowledge of database theory and design;
Superior MS Office skills; experience supporting and administering Microsoft server and client
systems;
VMware management experience;
Exposure to Unix/Linux environment, preferably Ubuntu;
Ruby On Rails skills and experience an asset;
Demonstrated ability to develop and manage all stages of complex Information Technology
projects, and deliver outcomes; and
Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to effectively communicate technology
concepts to non-technical users.
Length & Hours:
This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), two-year contract opportunity, with the possibility of becoming
permanent. This post will work out of our Ottawa office.
