Second in the Biology Department
The Appointment
An enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced teacher of A level Biology is required for September as
Second in Department, with significant responsibilities, in this very popular and highly successful
subject area at London’s leading Independent Sixth Form College. In the 2013 DfE A level league
tables of sixth form colleges Brampton College came top in London for the thirteenth successive
year and fourth nationally. Teaching is in small groups of highly motivated students.
Applications are invited from experienced teachers to join a strong and highly successful Biology
department.
The Biology Department
Biology is one of the largest and most important departments in the College with over 100 AS/Alevel students in the current academic year 2013/2014. Currently the Biology department is made
up of a full-time Head of Department, a second in the department and four part time members of
staff. Many of the departmental staff are examiners for the major examination boards. In total
there are fourteen teachers in the College’s Science Department and the department is well
served with four purpose-built, well-equipped laboratories and a full time technician.
The department offers A-level Biology (OCR), AS Biology (OCR) and IGCSE Biology. The A-level is
taught both as a one year and a two year course. IGCSE Biology is taught as a one-year course
(depending on numbers there is either one or two small groups, with no more than 10 students).
The department has a history of excellent exam results; for example in the academic year
2011/2012 53.0% of candidates obtained A/A* grades and 81% AB grades and in 2012/2013,
56.0% of candidates obtained A grades and 92% AB grades.
The Second in Department of Biology will need to work closely with other members of the
department, and most of the classes are shared. The majority of the teaching will be at A level on
the normal two year course, although a willingness to teach the one year intensive course is
desirable. The successful candidate should have recent experience of teaching AS and A2 Biology,
preferably with the OCR board.
Weekly departmental meetings are held in the Biology Department. The department has also
developed a range of support materials, including course notes and question packs, tailored to the
specific demands of the courses taught.
