Main objective for this week: provide a high-quality deliverable
Final report due by September 30
1. Overview of the current draft
General comments:
- Integration of comments and feedback received last week
- Cleaning and condensing of the document
Section 1
Section 1.1
The vision and the meaning of “food safety” have been clarified.
Section 1.2
This section has been aligned with European challenges.
Synergies with water, energy and manufacturing have been clarified.
Comments:
- Luis Pérez Freire: make the objectives (Table 1) more Europe-specific.
- Sara Blanc: consider pollution in water (for sea farming).
- Jürgen Vangeyte: smart farming should give value to the farmer, rather than provide
only a bunch of data. Alarms are not enough, solutions have to support decision making,
to advise and to help the farmer.
Section 2
Information added in the previous draft has been cleaned (statistical data about the agrifood
sector). Now it is used for introducing the section and understanding where are the main
opportunities.
Section 2.1
The whole table has been moved to Annex 1. Only summary of the main topics covered by the
identified initiatives is provided, with some examples:
1) partnerships and technology platforms
2) existing products and services
3) projects
References to initiatives in US and developing regions (Asia, Latin-America, Africa) have
included.
Pending & comments:
- complete with additional initiatives and non-EU initiatives (e.g. China)

-
Verdouw Cor: the Agri-Food project is not only focused on consumer.
Mario Díaz-Nava: urban horticulture is growing significantly in Mexico.
Section 2.2
The relevance criteria have been more clearly explained.
The table with use cases has been moved to Annex 2. In the text, only a couple of examples are
provided. Probably they will be updated.
Pending & comments:
- emphasize on open challenges
- consider explicitly the case of organic farming: it represents a growing market in
agriculture and people there are thinking differently
- Mario Díaz-Nava: knows big players in the Rhone-Alpes region in the field of organic
farming, but it will be difficult to get their feedback in a short time notice.
- Verdouw Cor: challenges in organic farming: TP Organics --> EU platform focusing on
organic farming.
Section 2.3
Recommendations have been cleaned and classified in groups: technology aspects, market
aspects, data privacy and exchange, and legacy issues.
Comments:
- Tomás Robles: involvement of the users and key players, and collaboration with SMEs
are important. A paragraph on societal acceptance will be added.
- Mariano Navarro: social innovation is at the end of the chain.
- Jürgen Vangeyte: the text in robustness should be extended (in particular, working in
real farm conditions). A short text will be provided.
Section 3
Section 3.1
This section has undergone only minor revisions.
Pending & comments:
- it remains open in case of identification of relevant technologies or standards which are
missing and should be put there
- clarify that only ICT technology is being taken into account
- Sara Blanc: some technologies related to sea farming seem to be missing
- Mario Díaz-Nava: sensor vs. smart device => improve table 1 of Section 3.1. A picture
with more details will be provided. Documents generated in WG3 last week will be sent
by Luis Pérez Freire in order to align views.
