General Action Steps for Evacuation of Jackson Library When the fire alarm horns and strobes activate in Jackson Library, it should be considered a real emergency unless otherwise informed. The following steps and procedures should be followed: 1. Remain calm. 2. When an alarm is sounded this orders the evacuation and all persons should leave immediately. Other announcements can be in the form of an emergency alert, PA announcement or verbal message from emergency responders. 3. Alert and encourage others as you leave the area that they should also leave the building. Staff members are not expected to force students out if they refuse, fire and police will do this when they arrive. 4. If you are inside of the building, you may exit from both primary entrance doors, College Ave. and the Connector, but you can also use emergency exit stairs to leave the building. DO NOT use elevators. 5. As you exit rooms or departments, shut doors as you exit if you are the last one out. 6. Once you are outside, keep moving away from the building and keep sidewalks clear, follow the directions of the evacuation message or emergency personnel to determine where to evacuate to or the area to avoid. 7. If you are directed to an evacuation assembly area, DO NOT leave the area until instructed to do so by emergency personnel. 8. Senior Staff should ensure that someone is posted at each entrance to keep people exiting and prevent others from re-entering until the all clear is given. 9. If you are unable to evacuate the building: go to the nearest emergency stairwell, notify University Police (334-4444) or 9-1-1 of your location, and wait for further assistance from emergency personnel. Renovated stairwells in the main building have rescue assistance call boxes. 10. DO NOT re-enter the area until instructed to do so by emergency personnel. This is beyond just having the alarms silenced; this also includes any investigation as to the cause of the alarm. Other notes: During some evacuations, you may not be allowed back into the building or campus for an extended period of time. While you should not comprise your safety to gather materials before evacuating, take any items you may need such as medication when you leave the area. On a departmental basis, check with your department head for instructions regarding where to gather outside or who to notify about leaving. Do not just leave without letting someone know!! In any event, always remember to follow the instructions of authorities as information becomes available. Remember to take all warnings and alerts seriously. AAG (leadership role) Members of AAG should assume a leadership role in the event of an evacuation. Each incident would be expected to be different but these general guidelines should apply: Assist with the movement of students and staff out of the building. Look for bottlenecks or blockage to crowd movement and encourage persons to move away from the building. i.e., exiting from College Ave., people should cross over College Ave., exiting from EUC Connector, people should move to the Kaplan Commons area, exiting from the back receiving door, people should move to the Moran Commons on the dining hall lawn, toward the fountain. (This is per the request of UNCG Emergency Management to facilitate clearing space for first responders.) Assist public service areas as needed for making announcements, securing valuables, directing personnel and/or students. Department Heads should have a departmental game plan for meeting or communicating with each other so as to ensure everyone at work is accounted for. Be available to assist first responders as needed, campus police are typically in charge during this event. Pass on any communication received that is pertinent to campus police. Stay in earshot of doors, assist or pay attention to communication coming from building. This helps facilitate an understanding of what is going on, and passing the work when the “All Safe” is called. At that time it is desirable for staff to reenter first to secure specific areas of the building.
