How to Find Your Alvin Results Files
The table below tells you how to locate the results files for each exercise. Take the first entry as an example:
‘c:\alvin2\phonetics\vowels\XXXvsym1.cm’. This means that your results file is in a folder called ‘vowels’, which is in a
folder called ‘phonetics’, which is in a folder at the very top called ‘alvin2’. The ‘XXX’ refers to the subject identifier you
entered when you ran the exercise, usually your initials. So, for the first example, my results file would be called
‘jmhvsym1.cm’. You can open and print these files using Word.
1. Start MS Word
2. File>Open
3. In the 'File name' box toward the bottom, enter something like 'c:\alvin2\phonetics\wordtranscription\jmhwords3.res' (but
use your own initials, or whatever you entered as a subject identifier).
Note that the place, manner, and voicing exercise produces three separate file names, one for each feature. Print all three. (If
the columns don’t line up you’ll have to do a ‘select all’ and change the font to Courier. For really wide tables, like the
consonant exercises, you may have to fiddle with the font size, and maybe even switch to landscape mode when you print the
file.)
IMPORTANT NOTE: You will need to make these hard copies and file them away as you do the exercises rather than
waiting until I ask to see them. At some point I will send an email asking you to bring the hard copies to class with you on the
following day. It will not work well at all if I get flooded with emails from students who are having problems finding or
printing the files. I am happy to help you with any problems that you are having, but not at the last minute.
