POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW SUPPORT PROGRAM GOALS:
The BUILD (Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity) Initiative is being undertaken to strengthen student training
and education aimed at enhancing preparation for doctoral studies and success in health-related research careers
among underrepresented and underserved students.
Important components of this initiative include developing a strategic plan to expand and improve the research
infrastructure for the campus and to advance faculty and campus research competitiveness and capacity. Cuttingedge, successful faculty research programs are a critical foundation for delivering excellent research training that
prepares students to be successful in highly competitive doctoral programs and health-related research careers.
The POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW SUPPORT Program, funded through BUILD, provides the opportunity for
faculty to obtain additional support for Post-doctoral fellows with less than 3 years of Post-doctoral experience that
is justified on the basis of direct benefit to the BUILD student training and research enrichment programs. Postdoctoral candidates from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
Award Features and Requirements:
Awards stipend based for 6-month period in support of a full-time Post-doctoral fellow. Salary is dependent on
Post-doctoral experience, as listed in the Table below.

The remaining 6 months of the Post-doctoral fellow’s salary is to be supported by funding from the PI (i.e., through
another grant or other external funding mechanisms) at the same level. Funds for this cycle of Post-Doctoral
Fellow Support must be spent between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017. For this cycle, the PI must commit to
supporting the Post-doctoral fellow for 6 consecutive months before or after the BUILD 6-month appointment.
Proposal Due Date: Monday Feb 29, 2016, by 5:00 pm pacific time
Limit on Number of Submissions: An individual faculty may only submit one proposal.
Proposal Review:
The applications will be evaluated by the BUILD Program Director and Co-Director in consultation with members
of the BUILD leadership team. Proposals with clear plans on how to integrate undergraduate student training
(BUILD and non-BUILD students) in the proposed research are desirable.
