Stream 1 Regional Natural Resource Management Planning for Climate Change SA Project Title Applicant Name Project Description Funding (GST exclusive) 2012-13 to 2015-16 $438,001 Regional NRM planning for climate change in the Eyre Peninsula NRM region Eyre Peninsula Natural Resources Management Board Eyre Peninsula's regional NRM Plan was adopted in 2009, and the Board is commencing a review in 2013. The Board will work toward an approach that enables the management of complex systems and more clearly links social and economic factors into natural resource management, providing a more holistic approach to planning and focussing attention on drivers (one of which is climate change) and change processes. The new plan will be based on an adaptive management approach with new information included as it becomes available. The amended plan will be consulted on during 2015 with adoption planned towards the end of 2015. Regional NRM planning for climate change in the South East NRM region South East Natural Resources Management Board The project will be run in conjunction with the review of the Regional Natural Resources Management Plan for the South East by 2016 and will complement planned review activities by enabling greater connections with the local community and utilise the extensive knowledge of local Aboriginal people to better plan for climate change. Desktop investigations and a new spatial tool will identify suitability for restoration of native vegetation and wetlands, biodiversity plantings, carbon farming and other adaptation activities. This work will form the basis of extensive community engagement to deliver sub-regional action plans that provide direction on appropriate climate adaptation activities and their placement in the South East landscape. Regional NRM planning for climate change in the Northern and Yorke NRM region Northern and Yorke Natural Resources Management Board The Northern and Yorke Natural Resources Management (NRM) Plan currently recognises the general impacts of climate change on the region’s natural resources but does not specifically address adaptation and mitigation actions and strategies. This project will work with the region’s community and key partners, and collate existing and new biophysical and socio-economic information to update the NRM Plan to identify priority landscapes for carbon and biodiversity plantings and strategies to build landscape integrity. This will be done in conjunction with the 5-yearly process to review the NRM Plan. $481,265 $414,342 Stream 1 Regional Natural Resource Management Planning for Climate Change SA Project Title Applicant Name Funding (GST exclusive) 2012-13 to 2015-16 Project Description $538,201 Regional NRM planning for climate change in the Kangaroo Island NRM region Regional NRM planning for climate change in the South Australian Arid Lands NRM region Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board Kangaroo Island’s location, topography and orientation mean it will experience region-specific alterations in climatic regimes, largely along an east-west gradient. Spatial analysis and predictive modelling, based on some existing data, will be used to forecast likely changes in species and community distributions, identify climatechange refugia in the landscape, and impacts on agriculture water resources and coastal systems. Socio-economic responses to climate change will be considered through community engagement workshops. Together, these activities will inform the strategic planning of land management activities and drive the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies that will contribute to increasing the resilience of the Island’s biodiversity, community and industries. $408,424 SA Arid Lands Natural Resources Management Board This project will work in conjunction with five yearly review of the entire plan to provide a document that has climate change and the carbon economy fully integrated into the regional plan. This will be achieved through a community engagement model, and will provide the structure and available data so that on ground NRM activities are directed by the best available science. This approach will ensure that the greatest NRM benefit is derived from the carbon economy and any potential negative impacts are minimised. The revised plan will provide clear guidance for carbon project developments in the region. 2 Stream 1 Regional Natural Resource Management Planning for Climate Change SA Project Title Applicant Name Funding (GST exclusive) 2012-13 to 2015-16 Project Description $667,250 Regional NRM planning for climate change in the South Australian Murray Darling Basin NRM region SA Murray Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board The existing Regional NRM Plan for the SA Murray-Darling Basin was released in 2009. The Board has recently reviewed its Regional NRM Plan and has now commenced a process of amending the Regional Plan. Current amendments to the Regional NRM Plan focus on integrating a landscape approach into the Regional NRM Plan. This involves developing conceptual diagrams at a sub-regional scale and defining systems that exist within each sub-region, the drivers influencing these systems and the impact of these drivers. This proposal will complement the current amendment process by gathering the best available information, strategy and policy on climate change and adaptation, developing options for management and engaging our community in developing a climate ready plan for the SA Murray-Darling Basin. $439,450 Regional NRM planning for climate change in the Alinytjara Wilurara NRM region Alinytjara Wilurara Natural Resources Management Board The project will work to amend the current Alinytjara Wilurara NRM Plan so that it identifies climate change adaptation priorities, and utilises opportunities to transform landscapes through better rangeland management, and to exploit opportunities for carbon sequestration through landscape regeneration. This will be achieved by undertaking a combination of a large scale review of current NRM knowledge and landscape change relevant to climate change, and local community-based analyses of NRM hazards and landscape management priorities. The updated NRM Plan will use an adaptive management framework linked to emergency management within communities, and best practice guides for rangeland, coastal and marine management. 3 Stream 1 Regional Natural Resource Management Planning for Climate Change SA Project Title Regional NRM planning for climate change in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM region Funding (GST exclusive) 2012-13 to 2015-16 Applicant Name Project Description Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board Under the Natural Resources Management Act 2004 the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board is required to prepare a Natural Resources Management (NRM) Plan for the region. The first regional NRM Plan was adopted in 2008, the Board undertook a review in 2010 and commenced the process to update the plan. The Board has adopted a systems (or resilience) approach to the plan. This approach enables the management of complex systems and more clearly links social and economic factors into natural resource management, providing a more holistic approach to planning and focussing attention on drivers (one of which is climate change) and change processes. The systems approach will enable us to communicate clearly our understanding of the critical links and dynamics between different parts of the system and clearly articulate why particular actions are being taken. The new plan is based on an adaptive management approach with new information included as it becomes available. The amended plan will be consulted on during the middle part of 2013, with adoption planned towards the end of 2013. The Board will seek to use the funds to engage and collaborate with its communities, develop supporting information and improving on the evidence base of the NRM Plan. 4 $468,100
