MYSTERY BOOK REPORT…
NAME_____________
Step 1. Follow the directions for completing a case report for your book. The template is
attached. Please be sure your details are clear and you pay attention to presentation
before you turn it in.
Step 2. Follow the directions for completing the setting map as outlined in this packet. You
will do a rough draft on the page attached and a final copy on a larger piece of paper
when that is finished.
Step 3. Create 5 – 7 character cards according to the directions given for that activity. The
cards are available on the back table. Please take only what you need.
Step 4. When you are finished with all pieces, and they are solid 5th grade work, attach them
in the case file (folder) in order: police report on bottom, map next and the character cards
(suspect photos) on top, stapled in the middle. Be sure to look at the example I’ve done
before you turn it in.
Step 1. Case Report - Complete the form attached (blue paper)for your book. Be sure to read the
directions and the questions carefully and write your answers clearly. Remember, this is the only
information about the crime details you will be providing to the investigators. They need to have
clear and concise information in order to efficiently solve the crime.
When finished, this will be attached first inside your case file (folder).

Step 2. Setting Map – The setting of a story (case) is the time AND the place. Your book has more
than one setting. The setting in a mystery is extremely important. It provides the reader with
information, clues and ideas. It also creates an atmosphere, or a mood, for the story.
For this part of your assignment you will be creating a setting map.
- First, make a list of the important settings in your book.
-
-
-
Then, choose ONE of those settings that is described in detail. Be sure to look back
in your book for specific descriptions and details so you can include them on your
map.
Be creative in how you indicate important places. (for example you might choose
a clever symbol to put in each place a clue was found).
Try to make your map match the mood of the story. You might do this through your
drawings, colors, and writing style.
Create a rough draft/sketch of your map on the back of this paper. When you
have it just right…
Create your final map on the piece of paper cut for the project (they are on the
back table). Color your illustrations and label each place on the map. Write the
name and the place and the important events that occurred there.
Give your map a title and write it at the top. Write the book title, author, and YOUR
NAME on the map.
Work completed neatly and according to the directions?
Did you list the important places and write about each?
Did you sketch your map?
Was your map complete and detailed?
Did your map include illustrations?
Did your map include labels of places and the events that occurred there?
Did you give your map a title?
Are the spelling, punctuation, and grammar correct?

Step 3 – Character Cards. You will be creating at least 5 character cards. Each card will include an
illustration and important information about a character.
Think about the things an author does to make you think about the characters. They make you think
about…
Name and approximate age:
Home: (where they live)
Occupation : (what their job is)
Physical description: (what they look like)
Role in the story (how were they involved in the mystery?)
Suspicious or unusual behavior
You will be including all of that information on the back of the cards you create.
First – make a list of characters that are most important to the story. Remember, even a character
that seems small may have a very important role in how things turn out.
Next – circle at least 5 of the characters on your list. You will make cards for each of these
characters.
Then – Grab the cards you need from the back table and get started.


On the front of the card, draw a picture or use magazines to create a picture
of the character. Write the character’s name above or below their picture.
On the back of the card, neatly write out the information you gathered on
each.
Note: If you are unable to find the exact information, write “Information not Available”.
Work completed neatly and according to the directions?
Did you list the important characters?
Did you make at least 5 cards?
Did you draw or create a picture on one side of each?
Did you complete the information on the other side?

When you are completely done with each piece, put them in your case file.


Fill the label on the front of the folder out with the title of your book, your name, and the date you
are turning your work in.
On the label on the tab, write the title of the book again.
On the inside of the file, your blue report goes in first so it will be on the bottom of the pile.
Your map goes on top of the report.
Then, all of your character cards are attached on top of the map.
Staple all pieces with no more than 2 staples as shown on the example folder.
