We will develop responsible citizens and lifelong learners, who will be prepared for the future. Overview Current Grade(s): Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Education Department currently oversees students starting from Head Start (3yrs of age) to Grade 12. Our school system runs out of 3 locations. Head Start and Nursery programs are run from 2 side by side portables located on the west side of the main school site. Kindergarten to Grade 6 programs are run from the main school site. Grade 7 to Grade 12 programs are run from the Sioux Valley High School site. This school is located in Brandon M.B. Curriculum: Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Education Department adheres to all provincial curriculum requirements from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Also, we have taken part in the grade 12 provincial examinations over the past 6 years. Currently we are taking part in our first year of grade 3, 7 and 8 assessments. Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Education Department promotes culturally relevant curriculum in all education areas. History units in all grade levels from Kindergarten to Grade 8 are a requirement for all teachers to create and implement. Sioux Valley High School offers a MB education department recognized grade 11 SIC course entitled “The History of Sioux Valley”. This course is taught using a time line and runs from pre-contact to the current state. Planning: Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Education Department is currently on the 3rd year of a 3 year school plan. We are currently working with Specialists from the Manitoba First Nation Education Resource Center to assist us in the development of our next 3 year plan. Currently, Sioux Valley Administration has implemented the curricular based weekly plans from Kindergarten to grade 12. Teachers are required to submit curricular based weekly plans every Monday morning prior to teaching occurring. This ensures Manitoba Curriculum outcomes are being met for all students attending the Sioux valley Schools. Page #2 Qualifications and accomplishments are listed and these are just a few of many. Mrs. Pratt is known for her dedication to her Dakota Language and the pursuit of its revitalization and maintenance. Her efforts will ensure that youth have access to the Dakota Language and Culture. How to accommodate the needs of the student with ADHD Presenter: Shirley McInnis Room #1 This workshop will relate to the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and strategies for educators and parents. Much of the presentation will focus on “Lifesavers” – how to best accommodate the everyday needs of a student with ADHD. Strategies will include presenting information, completing tasks, organizational skills, test-taking accommodations, and environmental accommodations. Building bridges with parents and tips on how to maintain key routines with their child will also be highlighted. Finally, two short videos on individuals living with ADHD will be part of the presentation. CAR and Student Engagement Presenter: Nadine Hart Room #06 This session will provide an overview of how to navigate through the Provincial host web application system. Users will become familiar with registering, ensuring up-to-date class lists, entering student data, saving and utilizing school planning reports, and producing and communicating parent reports. Also, this presentation will provide an overview of the Provincial Report on Student Performance in the classroom. Particular attention will emphasize the grade 7 student engagement competencies, common strategies and best practices. Creating A Positive Engaging Climate Presenter: Sylvia Wastasecoot & Arlene Flatfoot Beaulieau Room #23 Come alive with activities that appeal to the natural desires of children to move, laugh and have fun. Movement improves brain function and frees the brain for other tasks such as reading, writing, memory, problem solving and even confidence. Learn about strategies that will reinforce pro-social behavior, reduce toxic influences, limit problematic behaviors, and increase psychological flexibility (not acting on impulse, thoughts and feelings). The strategies used will also help students develop important life skills such as initiative, attention and concentration, persistence, frustration tolerance and self-control. These skills have a great bearing on success in life and mino-pimatiziwin. Helping All Our Students Succeed in School and in Life Presenter: Wayne Grafton Room #07 This workshop invites teachers to explore and share ideas about what might work in schools where too many kids skip classes, misbehave, and dropout. How can schools help students be more successful? Teachers will spend some time looking at the results of interviews completed by kids who have dropped out and what they might tell us about how we can help kids be more successful in school. Page #4 Language & Culture Program Presenter: Arlene McKay & Vera Mitchell Room #34 MFNERC Language & Culture Program supports Language & Culture programs in the First Nation schools by providing resources, training, and specialists support in the area of Language instruction and methods for language maintenance. The Dakota Language specialist will share and showcase programs that are in place in First Nation schools and also share materials and resources that can be adapted to assist in language planning and programming. Some of these examples are: Dakota BYKI computer program, Dakota books and lesson plans, culture camp ideas and training for language instruction. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss Language & Culture program ideas that can be implemented or adapted to fit each school. Math Activities/ Games K – 6 Presenter: Virginia Birch & Pam Courchene Room #05 Games can be a good tool to use as a way to support your math program and a great way to engage your students. This session participants will engage in activities which are geared towards K to Grade 8. Reading Comprehension Strategies in All Subject Areas Presenter: Chung Ong Room #21 This workshop In this session we will work with a variety of techniques that will engage the students and develop and enhance ELA skills and strategies in Math & Science. This is session is open to all K - 12 teachers. Running Records Presenter: Donna Prince Room #22 The goal of learning Running Records is for teachers to administer Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment to find the instructional level of each student in order to drive literacy instruction. Words Their Way/ Word Study Presenter: Cheryl Plaisier Room #24 Using the Words Their Way program to supplement your current word study program, will allow you to plan for individual student growth while creating a program that is engaging for all students. This session will involve an overview of the program including assessment tools and activities that can be easily incorporated into a balanced literacy program and can be used across all the curricula. Page #5 Autism- Strategies for Working with Children with Autism Presenter: Dr. Cam Symons & Julie Gurke Room #23 This workshop will deal with strategies for teaching students with autism. We will briefly discuss the various levels of autism and how it affects our classrooms. Presentation will include activities to increase student engagement and inclusion. First Nations Astronomy Presenter: Wilfred Buck Room GYM This workshop will consist of a power point presentation approximately 30 min. in duration followed by a planetarium presentation approximately 45 minutes in duration Helping Kids Write from K-12 Presenter: Wayne Grafton & Donna Prince Room #07 This workshop invites teachers to explore and share ideas about how kids develop as writers. We will look at samples of the continuum of writing from beginners to capable writers and look at how the provincial writing assessment models and the Writing Process are used by teachers Integrating Technologies into the Curriculum & Introduction to iPads in the Classroom Presenter: Dave Thiessen Room #01 This workshop will be a combination of information, demonstration and hands-on. IPads and other tablets are becoming popular in many schools. SMARTboards have been installed in many classrooms and all students are using computers to some extent. We will be using some of these technologies and finding how they can support/enhance the learning experience for students and keep them engaged in learning. It is important that we become facilitators of integrating technologies into the curriculum. Play Based Learning in the Nursery / Kindergarten Classroom Presenter: Mindy Sinclair Room #06 Participants will learn how young children learn best, through play. They will discuss how play is the foundation for school success in later years and what play has to do with collaboration, problem solving and confidence in learning. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and share how play can be incorporated into their own learning environments. School Discipline Policy Presenter: Ralph Arthurson Room #21 This workshop goes through the processes, procedures, interpretation and implementation of policies. The roles and responsibilities of school personal in each step. How to develop a classroom discipline policy. Page #6 SMARTboard Strategies for Teaching Math Presenter: Kristin Hack Room #24 This workshop encourages teachers to utilize smartboard technology to teach math. This is for multiple grade levels from kindergarten to grade 12. Teachers will receive many ideas for teaching different topics in mathematics. Teachers will be able to collaborate on what may work in their classroom for their smartboard and will be encouraged to share resources. Strategies for Success: Classroom Teacher Educational Assistant Relationship Presenter: Sylvia Sinclair & Paula Parisien Room #22 Many educators have received little or no training to assist them in effectively directing the work of the educational assistant. The purpose of this workshop is to provide basic knowledge and skills to manage and direct the work of the Educational Assistant. They will develop skills in: 1. Establish a CT/EA working relationship 2. Use constructive feedback to improve communication. The CT and EA are working together to meet the diverse needs of the students. Treaty Education Initiative (TEI) for K-4 Presenter: Dr. Betty Lynxleg Room #05 Dr. Lynxleg will provide a PowerPoint Presentation on the Treaty Education Initiative (TEI) Overview; facilitate a hands-on session to introduce the Treaty Education Kit resources for K-6; and demonstrate a sampling of the K-4 lesson plans. This session will be a combination of presentation and hand-on group activities and discussion. The Treaty Education Kit teacher resources for K-6 will be available to review. This session will provide participants with a good understanding of the TEI and the resources that have been developed to support Treaty education implementation in schools across the province. Stress in the Workplace Presenter: Deloris Daniels This workshop will discuss stress management. Room #34 Page #7 SAFE, Suicide Awareness for Educators Presenter: Kevin Kipling Room #35 This workshop will deliver valuable knowledge to teachers and staff in regards to Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Post-intervention procedures. This is a very strong subject/topic, and participants are cautioned before the workshop. The workshop will offer the participants hands on valuable and useful information to help deal with students that have suicidal behaviors and Mental Health Promotion. The workshop will share the findings and recommendations of Provincial and Federal procedures for suicide and Mental Health Strategies in Manitoba. Treaty Education Initiative (TEI) This workshop has three separate presenters. Room #04 Presenters: Elder Doris Pratt Elder Pratt will use the oral tradition as her method for sharing her perspectives on Treaties and the Dakota experience. Elder Pratt continues to work with the TRCM’s Treaty Education Initiative (TEI) as a member of the Council of Elders; and as an author of a short story titled The Dakota Oyate that she developed to support the TEI for grades 4 -6. Elder Pratt often makes presentations on behalf of the TRCM’s Speakers Bureau. This talk will provide an opportunity for participants to gain insight into the journey of the Dakota Oyate peoples through time and the unique relationship that they have with the Crown (Canada). Presenters: Dennis Whitebird Mr. White Bird will share his experience as the former Treaty Commissioner of the TRCM and his knowledge on Treaties and the Treaty relationship in the oral tradition. His presentation will provide background to the formation of the TRCM and how different interest groups were approached to become partners in the work of the TRCM. Mr. White Bird will also discuss his perspectives on Treaties and the Treaty relationship and the importance of educating the general public and students in schools from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Presenters: Mary Jane (MJ) McCarron MJ McCarron’s presentation will provide an overview of the TEI and discuss natural linkages between Treaty education and Manitoba curriculum. The presentation will include a PowerPoint Presentation, and small group activities where participants will explore the Treaty Education Kit resources and consider strategies for lesson plans across the subjects. Hands-on activities may also include an opportunity to illustrate how team work can support Treaty education implementation in classrooms.
