Barnett Ph.D. Professor of Interdisciplinary Humanities Jacksonville University My philosophy of teaching is focused to address the needs of particular students and classes and to incorporate new research and technology. It has been refreshing to pursue and utilize new models in the classroom. As a result, my teaching philosophy continues to evolve as new strategies for pedagogy have evolved. I have incorporated a diversity of learning methods and strive to bring scholarly research and debate into the classroom whenever possible. I am often reminded of a famous quote by Cicero, "the authority of those who teach is often an obstacle to those who want to learn." My goal is to influence my students (and fellow faculty) to strive for excellence in all areas and to be able to utilize their knowledge in a variety of ways from critical thinking to problem solving and research strategies. With all of this in mind, I believe that a good teacher or professor should possess the following: A good teacher seeks excellence and adheres to the process of "becoming" by refining, researching and experimenting with the new technology and pedagogy. To paraphrase a quote I once heard, "a teacher's major contribution sometimes is not the subject taught but the model caught." Helping students to develop positive and successful learning strategies is sometimes as important as the content. Good teachers are passionate about their subjects and students. They strive to incorporate concrete and concise examples, metaphors or parables to make their ideas clear. They define terms and respond to students and engage them in dialogue. They encourage "intellectual problem solving " and global awareness. Good teachers foster interdisciplinary connections between disciplines whenever possible. Good teachers assess pedagogy, curriculum content and encourage constructive criticism from students and peers. They collect formative and summative data. Good teachers are not afraid to fail or to try new innovations or technology. Technology is a component which I believe should be integrated where appropriate in particular classes. Good teachers share their knowledge, successes and failures and mentor younger faculty. They seek and form alliances with other members of the campus community to foster student success. Good teachers challenge their students through stimulating course content and rigor. In sum, I am committed to the success of my students and attempt to explore new content, pedagogy and uses of technology, and innovative engagement opportunities whenever possible.
