“The Ancient Landscape of Illyrian Apollonia:
Excavation and Survey”

The Mallakastra Regional Archaeological Project was a multi-disciplinary and
diachronic archaeological expedition formally organized in 1996 to investigate the
history of prehistoric and historic settlement and land use in central Albania, in an
area centered on the Greek colony of Apollonia. The project employed the
techniques of intensive archaeological surface survey in conjunction with natural
environmental investigations. Campaigns of fieldwork from 1998-2002 explored the
countryside around Apollonia and supported test excavations at several sites that
ranged in date from the Paleolithic through Hellenistic times. From 2003-2005,
excavations uncovered the remains of a previously unknown Greek temple and a
sanctuary that appears to have been established at the time of the foundation of the
colony in the later seventh century B.C.
