SONSHINE LINE Immanuel Lutheran School “But these are written that you may believe that JESUS is the CHRIST, the SON of GOD and that by believing, you may have LIFE in His name.” John 20:31 May 3, 2012 A Word from our Principal Today is the National Day of Prayer. It is a time when Christians nationwide pause to offer prayers and to reflect on the great blessing that God gives us in prayer. I am certain that many of us have experienced God working in and through our prayers. The wonderful blessing that we have is the knowledge that He promises that He hears our prayers and that He answers prayer. Our faculty meets in the mornings before school begins. We start our day in the Word and in prayer. We pray for each other, for our students and their families, and for additional needs we see around us. What a great way to start the day! It can be challenging to take the time in our busy lives to talk with God. We can get so busy and so focused on our to-do lists that we skimp on our prayer time. Martin Luther is quoted as saying, “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” I can really relate to that. As my busy-ness increases, so does my need for prayer. I find that I need to have a routine, a time and a place when private prayer is a habit. What is your routine for prayer? As with so many other things in life, if we do not establish a daily routine for prayer, we never seem to find the time for it. When and where do you pray? Is it a part of your every day schedule? Guard that time jealously. Don’t let anything take that time from you. It will be the most important time of your day! Faith Build – Volunteer Opportunity As spring arrives it is time to begin another home along with the Thrivent Builds program. New for this year Thrivent and Habitat For Humanity have agreed to make it a “Faith Build” opening the opportunity to have all people of faith in the Loveland area come and work along with the Thrivent Lutheran partners that have been with the program for years. This would be a great opportunity for our school to join in and help build a home for a family in Loveland. This year we are privileged to work on a home for the Ramos family of 7 that has waited 7 years to get their chance at a home. This will be the 7th home built by our Thrivent/ Loveland Habitat for Humanity, (funny how that 7 just keeps repeating) and also the largest to date (about 1800 square feet). The address is 599 East 27th (south of the post office and west of Conrad Ball Middle School) and our first work days will be May 18 and 19, 8:30 to 3:00. Just bring yourselves; all the tools will be provided and lunch and break goodies will be provided. If you are willing to give of your time and learn a new skill or refresh an old one let me know by return email and I’ll get you on the list or contact Marjie Johnson (Marjie@LovelandHabitatForHumanity.org) the volunteer coordinator at Habitat for more information. We can have up to 10 people each day. As the days get closer I’ll let you know what we will be doing and confirm your slot. Moms the Word Moms the Word provides fellowship for moms and their children. We'll offer opportunities for play dates and Mom's Night Out! We would love to have you at all or any of these events. Play Dates: We are offering play dates every 2nd and 4th Monday in the Children's Ministry room (room 113) from 10-12. There will be toys, books, coloring activities, coffee and tea. RSVP to Brandi Hintzman at 663-5355 or email mbtkhintz@gmail.com Parent Picks Quotes that Cause Me to Dig Deeper Dr. Craig S. Oldenburg, Director of Children’s Ministries I am a dad. Not a perfect one. A learning one. One who gets it right once in a while. Come along with me and explore some gems I have dug up from the latest parenting book I am reading. Each quote should be read within the context of the book, therefore, I am supplying book & page information. Presently I am reading Parenting with Love & Logic by Foster Cline, M.D. & Jim Fay. Now for another quote: “Just because we shy away from issuing orders and imposing our solutions on our kids’ problems does not mean we give license to all sorts of misbehavior. ….Neither of us is in any way soft on misbehavior… …True, we allow out kids to mess up, and we don’t drive home the lesson of their misdeeds without words. We are slow to lecture; we never actually tell our kids what they have just learned. We believe telling our kid what to think is counterproductive. We can give them guidance, but they must think for themselves. Making enforceable statements and giving choices forces that thinking back on them. ” (Foster Cline 2006, 65). No lecturing with misbehavior. Can you imagine? I still get so tempted to do the “quick fix” method of lecturing my 3year-old and hope it causes a change. Huh?! When I have seen long term changes in my daughter’s behavior it has been connected to the well thought through choices and enforceable statements the authors describe so well. I actually get to watch my daughter even love the process at times. More to come next week. Summer Camp at Lutheran Valley Retreat (NW of Woodland Park, CO) Immanuel Lutheran Church’s Children's Ministries would like to encourage as many kids to go to camp during the same week (July 29-August 3) at Lutheran Valley Retreat (LVR). The idea is that this will help with parent transportation and having friends at camp. Craig Oldenburg, Director of Children’s Ministries, has ONE church van reserved that can carry up to NINE kids to camp for the week ($15 per person will cover gas). The kids stay in cabins of 7 campers, a trained college age counselor and a CIT (Counselor in Training). On the registration form for camp, kids are asked if they would like up to two cabin “buddies.” Programs with horse, mountain bikes and rock climbing cost slightly more. If you have more questions, look at www.lvr.org, or contact Craig at coldenburg@immanuelloveland.org or 970.667.4506 x4018. Affordability: Steve Johnson, Director of LVR, shared in a recent ILS chapel that it is fine to give him a call and ask for a “camp scholarship.” They would rather have kids at camp then sitting home.
