Level 1 Global Scholars Badges
As a Global Scholar, you must take ownership of your learning by completing choice activities and attending
Global Scholar events You will document these activities online in order to accumulate at least 300 points by
June 12, 2015. There are minimum point requirements in each of the four domains of Global Competence.

Activity
Film/Presentation Watch a foreign film, documentary or presentation and write a
reflection on the theme, setting and characters. Compare it to another film or book that you
have seen/read. Include the title and the date that you watched it. What questions do you
have after watching this film, documentary or presentation?

Global Issues Attend or watch the streaming video of a Columbus Council on World
Affairs luncheon or public lecture (http://columbusworldaffairs/events/ )

information with someone else. What questions do you have related to this issue that you
might want to explore in the future.
News Use online English language newspapers from three countries to monitor the
headlines for a week. Do the same events make the headlines in each country or not? Why
do you think that might be?
Consumer Products Inventory household items (manufactured items, clothing and
food) and record the country of origin on a map or chart. Summarize your findings and
hypothesize about why the items originate in that country. What questions were you unable
to answer in your research?
Architecture Explore styles of architecture that vary across cultures and investigate how
the variations may tie to culture, influences from other cultures, and local geography. What
questions would you be able to answer if you were able to visit the buildings you studied?
Politics Investigate the political system of a country other than the United States. Who
are the leaders? How are they elected? Which are the main political parties? How has the
country’s government changed over time? What are the major political issues at this time?

Diversity of Our Community Attend the Springfield Culturefest 2014. Visit displays,
vendors, demonstrations, and stages with shows. Take your picture beside a display or

participating in an activity. Reflect on how attending Culturefest 2014 made an impact on
you or changed your thinking about people from other cultures.
Codex Institute Simulation Complete the simulation in class which will provide
students an opportunity to act as an international regulatory agency. The objective is to
research, discuss and make a decision regarding a controversial topic of food safety. In this
case, the driving question is mandatory labeling of Genetically Modified Food of Codex

Recognize Perspectives

Activity
News Compare news reports from sources in three different countries to identify different
perspectives on the same event. Summarize and cite your sources. How do the perspectives
from other countries compare to your own perspective?
Literature Read a book by an author from another country and reflect on the
perspectives that may be different from your own.
Interview Interview a person who was born in another country in order to understand
how the culture in the United States is similar or different than the culture they experienced
in their country of origin. Explore topics like family, dating, weddings, care of the elderly,
interest in politics, careers, and recreation. Make a chart comparing the U.S. perspective
with the perspective of the country you are exploring.
Sports Investigate a sport that is more popular in countries other than the U.S. Summarize
the information you found about that sport (fan customs, participation, etc.) and suggest
why you think it may not be as popular in the U.S.
Transportation Explore the types of transportation commonly used in countries on
three different continents – crowded buses, high speed rail, personal cars, subways, combies,
etc. Explain how the use of that type of transportation relates to the culture and geography
of the country.
Fashion Although western clothing has been adopted by many people around the world
there are regional variations. While we would not expect people in Japan to wear a kimono
at the office, kimonos are still sold for use on certain occasions. Explore clothing variations
across cultures and the times and places where those variations are most appropriate.
Create a display, collage, poster, etc. to demonstrate your learning.
Faith Explore different types of faith practiced around the world. Attend at least two of the
following and reflect with a one page paper on how these two activities impacted or changed
your thinking and how you shared this information with someone else.

World Language Practice Record or video tape a conversation at least ten minutes in
length that you have with a speaker of the language you are studying.
Essay Write a one-page essay explaining why you are pursuing the global scholars diploma
and how you think it will have an impact in your life. What would be the reaction of a teen in
another culture reading this essay?
Names Addressing people by their names correctly is very important in cross cultural
relationships. Explore naming customs in countries on three continents and summarize.
Audience Imagine that you are trying to promote an idea or sell a product to people of
another culture. Choose a particular country and product/idea. Explain what might be
important to keep in mind when addressing that audience. Submit your presentation as a
video or script.
Dos and Taboos Gestures and greetings are some of the many customs that vary from
culture to culture. What may be desirable in one culture can be less desirable or even
offensive in another. Investigate differences across three cultures.
Racial Profiling Attend Racial Profiling session on January 8, 105 Shouvlin Center,
Wittenberg Univ, 6:30 pm, In one page reflect on what you learned from this seminar and
how did it change your future thinking and actions.

Organizations Identify a group that is making a difference on a global issue. Identify a way
that you would contribute to the efforts of this group.
Careers Identify a career pathway that interest you and locate information on the
requirements for those jobs. Outline a path to prepare for that career.
Heroes Identify one or more people who are making a difference in the world today. Create a
video, poem, play, dance or work of art to honor their work.
Volunteer Work with a community organization of your choice to create change in the
community. Reflect on the difference that your volunteer work has made.

Youth Institute according to the information provided at
