iPromise Mentoring Program
Origin
I Promise is a foundation founded by LeBron James, the Miami Heat forward. In August of 2011, an
important promise was made in Akron, Ohio. 342 Akron Public Schools third grade students made a
promise to their hero. They promised him they would go to school, be respectful to their parents,
teachers and peers, be active and make good decisions. In return, he promised them that he would be
the best role model he could be, on and off the court.
After reading about the success in Akron, Ohio I was influenced to bring such a program to Klein Forest
High School. During the 2012-2013 season many of our student athletes in the basketball program
began to become ineligible to play. It was a struggle for their teammates, coaches, and themselves to
triumph without them and encountered defeat simply because they didn’t make the grades in the
classroom.
As the season came to a close I came to the conclusion that a change had to take place. So, February 20,
2013, I called a meeting to inform the players and coaches about implementing the concept and creed
of I Promise at Klein Forest High School. Hence was the birth of the I Promise Mentoring Program. No
longer would ineligibility be a norm amongst our basketball program but academic success, young men
who carried themselves in a respectful manner and contribute their time and efforts to their
communities. Although the program is in its infant stages, the expectation for the 2013-2014 basketball
season are high both on and off the court and our basketball students are ready to keep the promise.
