The scoping search strategies for the bibliographic databases are presented with Cab
Abstracts first and Scopus second.
1. CAB Abstracts

Search Strategy:
Relevant CABICODES* (listed below) were selected to conduct searches for
documents on CAB Abstract. Searches were tested primarily with EE CABICODES
as a larger number of these codes were identified as relevant to the search strategy (as
demonstrated in Table 2.1). The search terms were also applied to chosen UU, KK,
CC, PP, LL, and MM CABICODES.
Search terms were selected using the CAB Abstracts Thesaurus. Descriptor and
identifier terms from the Cab Thesaurus were selected using an initial list of key
terms compiled by the project team and from the descriptor and identifier terms used
for the 12 documents in the test library. Search terms were selected that were both
relevant to the subject area & broad, in order to capture a wide range of documents.
In order to further broaden the search results, variations of the search terms were also
used to search document titles.
The scoping search was conducted using facilities at the British Library. Multi-field
searches were conducted using only the descriptor index (termed subject headings in
Ovid) or identifier terms. Additional terms were added iteratively based on those
descriptors that occurred most frequently in the test library papers.
*CABICODEs – are the CAB classification, which allow the database user to search
the CAB using letters and numbers. Each CAB classification refers to an area of
interest e.g. EE CABICODEs refer to documents that are in the subject area of
economics.
*Subject Headings act as a descriptor index in CAB Abstracts. They are assigned to
every document in the CAB Abstracts database and describe the document’s subject
field.

Search terms were selected using an initial list of key terms compiled by the project
team and from the keywords Scopus used to describe the 12 documents in the test
library. Search terms were selected that were both relevant to the subject area and

broad in order to capture a wide range of documents. Additional search terms were
added iteratively as other relevant documents were identified in scoping searches.
The search strategy was conducted using the advanced search field in Scopus and the
appropriate advanced search features including inverted brackets {} to search phrases
and wildcard searches (*). Searches were conducted across document titles, abstracts
and keywords (TITLE-ABS-KEY).
The final proposed search string limited the search results to 15 relevant subject
areas: Agricultural and Biological Sciences; Arts and Humanities; Earth and
Planetary Sciences; Economics, Econometrics and Finance; Energy; Environmental
Science; Multidisciplinary Life Sciences; Multidisciplinary Physical Sciences;
Multidisciplinary; Social Sciences; Psychology; Social Sciences; and Veterinary.
