Snowman Craft – Arts Education Lesson Name: Victoria Fredlund and Skyler Fellner Date: November 25th, 2015 Subject: Arts Education Grade: 1 Content: (Topic) Students will be doing an arts and craft lesson today around snowmen. Since it is near the beginning of winter we will be crafting a snowman using some of the basic shapes they have been learning about in math class. Students will be given a snowman outline and we will discuss as a class some of the different shapes we would find on snowmen. After we have discussed we will learn the “I’m a little snowman” song where we will learn all of the things our snowman will need. After we have listened to the song we will discuss all of the things the song said our snowman will need. Students will then be given their blank snowman and worksheets with pre drawn shapes (little circles, triangle, and some rectangles) to attach to their snowmen. Students will take the rest of the class to work on their snowmen and if they complete it before the end of class they can color their snowman and the background to make it more decorative. After we have completed our snowmen we will hang them up on a nearby bulletin board for students to share. Outcomes: CP1.7 - Investigate a variety of formal and informal patterns in art works and the environment, and apply observations to own work. Indicators: b. Represent details of the physical appearance of plants, animals, people, and objects, noting how patterns can be created by repetition of colours, lines, and shapes. Cross Curricula Competencies: Math Outcome: SS1.3 Replicate composite 2-D shapes and 3-D objects. a. Select 2-D shapes from a set of 2-D shapes to reproduce a composite 2-D shape. c. Predict and select the 2-D shapes used to produce a composite 2-D shape, and verify by deconstructing the composite shape. Prerequisite Learning Students need to describe and recreate basic shapes they have learned in their math class and use it in today’s lesson. They must be able to properly use scissors and glue. Adaptive Dimensions: If students do not have the ability to properly use scissors and glue then teachers could have some of supplies precut so students can glue on the shapes. Preparation: (Equipment/Materials/Set-up) Have markers, scissors, glue sticks, worksheets, and blank pieces of paper all ready to go before class so students have more time to work. Having the video all loaded up on the projector or smart board before class so you don’t have worry about loading up during the class while keeping the students occupied. Time Required for Lesson: 45 Minutes Introduction/Discussion/Video (10-15 Minutes) We will start off the class by discussing that winter is coming soon. Introducing the snowman craft we are doing today. We will discuss what shapes we could see on a snowman. After we have discuss for about 5 minutes, we will watch the “I’m a little snowman” video and learn about what kind of things we will need on our snowmen. We will dance and sing along to have students engaged. After we have watched the video we will make a checklist of what our snowman will need as class before handing out all the supplies students will need. Worksheet/Poem (20-30 Minutes) Students will be cutting out different shapes to put on our snowmen. Students will be working to complete all the snowman checklist for the remainder of class. If students finish early they can color their snowman’s features and also color something in the background of their picture. Extra Worksheet/Closure (5-10 Minutes) If needed we will have some connect the dots for students to work on if they complete their snowmen. If all students complete the lesson early we will have a sharing session as a class and have students explain. Assessment: Students will be assessed on their completion of the snowman craft.
