The Wm. Jasper and Martha Ann Breshears Memorial Scholarship is available through the
University of Central Missouri Foundation for a student pursuing a degree in teacher education.
This scholarship is made possible by way of gifts from family and friends of Wm. Jasper and
Martha Ann Breshears in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Breshears and to honor their daughter, Oleta
Mauer, UCM Class of 1956, on her birthday in 1996.
SCHOLARSHIP BACKGROUND:
Oleta Breshears Maurer is the youngest of eight children born to Jasper and Martha Breshears.
The family of five girls and three boys grew up on a farm in the Breshears Valley north of
Wheatland in Hickory County, Missouri. The small community of Avery was home, but there
was no high school there. This was at a time when most girls did not think about going to high
school, much less college, so Mr. and Mrs. Breshears received considerable criticism for
allowing the girls to attend high school since they had to go away from home and live with other
people while doing so. Ethel, the second daughter, deserves much credit for being the first to
express her desire to attend high school, and her parents encouraged her in that dream. With the
encouragement of their parents, and by working at various jobs, four of the girls completed high
school and went to Warrensburg to attend college there. All four taught for a period of time, and
three made teaching their life-long careers. The efforts of Jasper, Martha and their daughters
have immeasurably enriched the lives of their immediate family and their descendants by
instilling a devotion to education. It is that devotion to education that the family members and
relatives want to perpetuate through the establishment of this scholarship.
CRITERIA:
To apply, a student must:
a. be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at UCM;
b. be pursuing a degree in teacher education;
c. demonstrate good character, leadership and service;
d. have graduated from a high school located in Hickory County, Missouri (however, if no
applicants from Hickory County, Missouri apply or are deemed ineligible, second
preference shall be given to a student(s) that graduated from a high school located in
Benton County, Missouri).

Scholarship Application
SELECTION PROCESS:
1.
The recipient(s) of the Wm. Jasper and Martha Ann Breshears Memorial Scholarship will
be recommended by a selection committee designated by the Chair of the Department of
Curriculum and Instruction, and by Mrs. Oleta Mauer, daughter of Wm. Jasper and
Martha Ann Breshears, for as long as she wishes to be involved. Recipient(s) shall be
approved by the UCM Scholarships and Awards Officer.
2.
The application must be delivered or postmarked by March 1. Recipient(s) shall be
announced by May 15 of any given year.
3.
The Selection Committee, with the approval of the Executive Director of the Foundation,
will annually establish the number and award amount. In a given year, the Selection
Committee may exercise the option of making no selection.
