MidAmerica Nazarene University SOAR 2009 Summer Orientation, Advising and Registration June 19-20 – SOAR I (incoming freshmen) July 10-11 – SOAR II (incoming freshmen and transfers) ______________________________________________________________________________________ Here’s what’s happening at SOAR… SOAR is an event designed to help you begin the transition to college life and get a head start on your career at MNU. It is an opportunity for you to enroll in classes for the fall, get your Post Office box number and dorm room assignment. All new students are encouraged to attend each event of the weekend. Students are free. The cost for parents and/or siblings who want to attend SOAR is $25, if staying on campus. Freshmen students are students who have just graduated from high school (2009 graduates) and/or students who graduated from high school before 2009 and have no college credit. Transfer students are students (who are not 2009 high school graduates) transferring in 24 or more credits accepted by MNU from another college. They are not new students – they are only new to MNU. Although they know the basics of university life, universities are different. These differences are one of the reasons transfer students should attend SOAR II. July 10 is the day set aside for transfer students to meet with a faculty advisor to enroll for fall classes and have transcripts evaluated. Please call the Office of Admissions at 1-800-800-8887, ext. 3380, or 913-971-3380 (Kansas City area) to set up your appointment time. Be sure all transcripts have been forwarded to MNU for evaluation before you come. If this is not possible, bring unofficial transcripts with you. CLEP, ACT and Compass Exam Info: If you have not taken the ACT prior to SOAR, you will be required to do so Saturday morning prior to registration. Payment for all tests is due at test time-- do not send money in for tests with your registration. CLEP test fee is $90 each. Bring two checks – one made out to MNU for $20 and one made out to CLEP for $70 (CLEP fee increases to $92 at SOAR II). If you do not want to take CLEP during SOAR, you may take CLEP tests at any time during your college years. If you have questions about CLEP, contact the MNU Kresge Academic Support Center at 1-800-800-8887, ext. 3387. The cost for the ACT test is $40. You CANNOT enroll in classes until the ACT (or SAT) examination has been taken, MNU has received a report of the scores, and your admissions file is complete. Note: A photo I.D. will be required for all tests. Advising session by major. You will be given an opportunity to meet with a professor from your major academic area to receive information concerning the “prescribed” academic path to take in order to accomplish and complete your degree. Be prepared to ask questions and learn the value of academic awareness and the purpose of the faculty advisor. Your Post Office box number/combination will be included in your packet when you check in. If you have problems opening your Post Office box, you can stop by the Post Office, also located in the Campus Center. Friday Night Dinner and General Gathering. Enjoy a Friday night feast with the MNU community and other SOAR guests. There will be special guests, fun giveaways and you will receive important information about the Saturday morning registration process. Everyone should plan to attend this fun and informative evening. If parents wish to attend this event but are not staying on campus, the cost is $10.00 per person. Dinner will be served in Uphaus Hall at College Church of the Nazarene. Parent Session. On Saturday, the parents will have their own session with administrators covering topics such as: mission and ministry opportunities, campus life, academics, the financial aid process and more. This is a chance to ask more specific and personal questions. It is a unique and beneficial opportunity to be sure you have had all your questions answered. SOAR concludes on Saturday. The scheduled SOAR activities will conclude on Saturday. However, if you would like to stay in the dorms on Saturday night, you are welcome to do so at no extra cost (please specify this on the registration form). Meals will not be provided after lunch on Saturday.
