Subject Group of Built Environment 3410 Solid Waste Disposal Engineering Summer Description and rationale: Landfill is the last stage of a solid waste management system. Not like other waste management technology, i.e. incineration, it takes long time to stabilize waste in a landfill. Therefore, its impact may extend to future generation if enough management isn’t taken. So, landfill should be constructed and operated properly so as to prevent environmental issue caused by leachate or gas in a long-term as well as in a short term. For this, understanding of various phenomena arising in landfill is indispensable. In addition having sufficient skills for designing each facility installed in landfill based on phenomenological understanding is important. This lecture covers not only design aspects of landfill but also various phenomena arising in landfill such as biological degradation of waste, behaviour of heavy metals, leachate and gas migration, solute transport etc. Furthermore, history of technological development and current strategies taken in Japan and other countries will be provided.
