Summer Campfire Programs at Whatcom County Parks The Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce our schedule of evening campfire programs for Summer 2008. Enjoy gathering by a crackling fire at days end to celebrate a sense of place with stories and music. We’ll gather to hear of Native Americans, homesteaders, wild animals, moving mountains, and much more. Semiahmoo Sunsets Saturday, June 28, 9-10pm Saturday, July 19, 8:30-9:30pm Saturday, August 30, 7:30-8:30pm This “long, low narrow strip of glistening sands flung out into the Georgian Gulf” immortalized by poet Ella Higginson has been the stage for the lives of Native Americans, the salmon canning industry, and one of the crown jewels of Whatcom County Parks. Trace the threads of these stories as the sun dips into the sea for one of the legendary Semiahmoo sunsets. Follow signs at Semiahmoo Park to campfire location. At The Feet of Koma Kulshan Saturday, July 26, 8-9pm Saturday, August 16, 8-9pm Mount Baker towers over Whatcom County, an icy countenance belying its volcanic fires. Hear stories of those who challenged and celebrated this mountain, and explore the lives of beavers at Silver Lake. Program held at Group Picnic Shelter in Silver Lake Park. $2>Register at beginning of program. No Minimum Age>Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Orcas—Hunters of the Sea Saturday, July 12, 8:30-9:30pm Friday, August 22, 7:30-8:30pm Majestic—and endangered—Orca whales are often seen from shore at Lighthouse Marine Park. We will trace the life journey of these fascinating animals, listen to their haunting songs and ponder their future as we relax by the shores of Point Roberts. Celebrate Parks and Recreation Month with New Family Interpretive Programs at Hovander Park July is National Parks & Recreation Month and the Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce a series of new family interpretive programs at Hovander Homestead Park in Ferndale. Park interpreter David Bean will lead the four “Sunday in the Park” programs. Get an in-depth tour of the historic Hovander House, churn some real butter in the big red barn (and taste it!), and get up close with some of the rabbits, goats, and pigs that live at Hovander Park.
