TERMS OF REFERENCE
SEASONAL INSTRUCTOR, SCTC MOD CALEDONIA AND PORT EDGAR
PREAMBLE
1. The Seasonal Instructor at SCTC MOD CALEDONIA/Port Edgar Boat Station, is employed by
the Marine Society & Sea Cadets and is a temporary member of the Commanding Officer’s
staff, based at SCTC MOD CALEDONIA/Port Edgar Boat Station.
PRIMARY PURPOSE
2. The Primary Purpose of the Seasonal Instructor, SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar, is
to instruct cadets and adults at Port Edgar and SCTC MOD CALEDONIA as required by the
Commanding Officer.
SECONDARY PURPOSE
3. The Secondary Purpose of the Seasonal Instructor, SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar
is to carry out maintenance of boats at Port Edgar.
ACCOUNTABILITY
4. The Seasonal Instructor, SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar, is directly accountable to
the Commanding Officer of SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar.
AUTHORITY
5. The Seasonal Instructor, SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar, in the course of their
duties has authority over:
a.
all trainees in SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar as laid down in Centre standing
orders and their Terms Of Reference.
PRINCIPAL TASKS
6. The principal tasks of the Seasonal Instructor, SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar,
include but are not restricted to:
a.
Delivering training in boat work and any other SCC Specialisation and proficiency to
trainees at SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar as required by the Commanding Officer,
Ministry of Defence, and by the Marine Society & Sea Cadets, and RYA documentation.
b.
Ensuring that the Health and Safety of trainees, staff and visitors to SCTC MOD
CALEDONIA and Port Edgar are at all times maintained in accordance with best practice.
c.
Ensuring adequate supervision of cadets and other young people in SCTC MOD
CALEDONIA and Port Edgar so as fully to discharge his/her duty of care to young people.
d.
Assist with maintenance of SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar, including its
buildings, site, boats, vehicles and equipment as required by the Commanding Officer
e.
Act as Establishment Officer of the Day as required by the Commanding Officer.
f.
Ensure adequate arrangements are in place for the security of the site, buildings,
equipment and personal possessions at SCTC MOD CALEDONIA and Port Edgar.
g.
Maintaining in date qualifications as required by the Commanding Officer as well as a
current First Aid Certificate.
OTHER DUTIES:
7. In order to deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility is needed and the post holder
may be required to perform work not specifically referred to above. Such duties, however,
should not normally exceed those expected of an employee at that level.
SAFEGUARDING:
8. All employees are expected to take responsibility for the young people under their
supervision, and for the safeguarding of their moral, psychological and physical welfare in
accordance with MSSC Child Protection and Safeguarding policies.
HEALTH AND SAFETY:
9. The MSSC has a health and safety policy, which outlines its responsibilities as an employer,
and the responsibilities of its employees in respect of health and safety. All employees need
to be aware of this policy, share its commitment and comply with the safety arrangements.
For the purposes of health, safety and the environment, employees with line management
responsibility are required to:




Plan, organise, review and monitor the work of his/her department;
Ensure the work place, substances, arrangements and equipment under his/her control are safe
and fit for purpose;
Provide or arrange resources to support health and safety requirements;
Ensure persons under his/her control are competent to carry out the work required.

10. In fulfilling their role, all employees are expected to comply with Data Protection legislation
and the MSSC Data Protection Principles & Privacy Policy and procedures.
