Northeast Alabama Community College Fall 2014-2015 SYLLABUS PED 133 Tennis (Beginning) 1 Semester Hour - C I. 2 Contact Hours Course Description This course emphasizes the fundamentals of tennis. Topics include basic strokes, rules, etiquette, and court play. Upon completion, students should be able to play recreational tennis. II. Prerequisite None III. Course Textbooks, Manuals, or Other Required Materials Instructor prepared handouts. IV. Course Learning Outcomes A. B. C. D. V. The student will learn to enjoy participation in tennis. The student will learn the fitness benefits of tennis. The student will learn the social benefits of tennis. The student will learn the history of tennis. Activities Promoting General Education Outcomes Cognition--Critical thinking: Students will use critical thinking in applying rules of tennis and in developing strategies for the various aspects of the game. Written and oral quizzes 2. Written exams 3. Observation of student play The individual instructor and/or department will determine grades based upon the following: A=90–100%, B=80–89%, C=70–79%, D=60–69%, and F=below 60%. B. Departmental Assessment of General Education Outcomes Cognition--Critical thinking skills will be assessed by a quiz requiring application of the rules of tennis. Students will demonstrate the attainment of the general education outcome of Cognition--Critical thinking skills with a score of at least 70% or higher on the selected quiz. C. Use of Assessment Findings During the Fall In-service of the year following the scheduled review of PED 133, a committee will review all course assessment materials submitted by the instructors and division director. The committee will submit a report of any recommended curriculum changes for PED 133 to the division director, who will then submit them to the Student Learning Outcome (SLO) Committee. Upon approval by the SLO Committee, a copy will be filed with the Office of Institutional Planning and Assessment. IX. Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should withdraw from that class before poor attendance interferes with the student’s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid. 2 X.
