Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Describe the consequences of marine mammal incidental capture by commercial fishers. Performance criteria 1.1 The description outlines the consequences of marine mammal incidental capture to the marine ecosystem. 1.2 The description outlines the consequences of marine mammal incidental capture to the commercial fishing industry. Range 1.3 public expectation, consumer reaction to seafood products. The description outlines the consequences of marine mammal incidental capture on the economic operation of the fishing vessel. Range access to fisheries, cost recovery levies, penalties for noncompliance, creation and review of fisheries legislation. Element 2 Describe the legislative protection for marine mammals. Performance criteria 2.1 The description identifies the marine mammals protected by New Zealand legislation. 2.2 The description outlines the level of protection provided by New Zealand legislation. 2.3 The description outlines the sanctions that may be applied to commercial fishers found not to be complying with the legislation. Element 3 Describe methods for the reduction of marine mammal incidental capture during commercial fishing operations. Performance criteria 3.1 The description outlines ways in which fishing boats can be made less attractive to marine mammals in accordance with company requirements. Performance criteria 4.1 The description outlines safe handling techniques for assisting live marine mammals on board to return to the sea in accordance with company requirements. 4.2 The description outlines the treatment of injured, and disposal or retention of deceased marine mammals, in accordance with company requirements. 4.3 The description outlines personal hygiene requirements for the prevention of transmission of disease and infection from marine mammals to humans. Element 5 Describe the recording and reporting requirements for incidental capture of marine mammals. Performance criteria 5.1 The description outlines data recording and reporting requirements in accordance with company requirements. 5.2 The description explains the purpose of data collection in terms of population assessment. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
