Introduction
The appointment based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospitals is a replacement post which
was created for a suitably experienced trainee Anaesthetist to gain experience of paediatric
anaesthesia in a teaching referral centre. The post is aimed a candidates who wish to pursue an

Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major teaching Trust with five
hospitals on two sites. The five hospitals are Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Manchester Royal
Eye Hospital (MREH) and St. Mary’s Hospital (SMH) and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital
(RMCH) all situated on the main Central Manchester site and the Dental Hospital also in Central
Manchester.
The Trust has recently undergone a major re-building programme through the completion of one of
the largest PFI initiatives in the NHS. The building programme completed in 2009, provided new
facilities for medicine, obstetrics/gynaecology, ophthalmology and brought Children’s services to
the Central Manchester site.
The new Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital opened in June 2009. It is the largest children’s
hospital in the UK with 371 beds. The hospital provides children’s emergency, secondary and
regional tertiary services, having brought together the services previously provided at Booth Hall
Children’s Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (Pendlebury) and St Mary’s Hospital for
Women and Children. The alignment of these secondary and tertiary services provides an
impressive facility for children and babies throughout North West England and should lead to a
golden era of child health care in the Region. Local services have been developed to continue
provision of secondary services in North Manchester and Salford.
The National Institute for Health Research has recently allocated, through open competition,
Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) status to the Central Manchester and Manchester Children's
University Hospitals NHS Trust and University of Manchester partnership. This achievement,
allocated only to the leaders in scientific translation research, brings with it substantial levels of
funding to translate fundamental biomedical research into clinical research that benefits patients. Our
