Welcome to BCJHS Tennis!

Fall sports parent meeting. Tuesday, August 11, 2015 www.browncountytennis.com

I do my best to keep this updated.

Between the website and the Remind text/email messages, you should be pretty well up to date.

1. Welcome / Introduce Coach Miller and Coach Drew

Primary goals (JH and HS): work hard, have fun, learn something, and be a good teammate.

Prepare JH players for HS tennis and a life-long love of the sport.

We truly love this game and hope it’s a great experience for your children.

2. Tradition of Brown County Tennis

We are in the continual process of establishing a tradition of excellence in BC tennis.

We have had a lot of success and plan to continue being successful in the future.

We have former players who still love playing, former players coaching, and we’ve had good results

We also have winning records and conference championships, sectional contenders and state rankings in HS tennis

Note concerning High School Girls’ Tennis FYI from the HS girls tennis coach.

In high school, girls’ tennis is a spring sport in HS, you will need to choose between tennis, track, and softball.

High school tennis used to be a “seasonal sport” but excellence in any endeavor requires a daily, year-round commitment.

Girls would play in the spring only and be “good enough” to be on the team

That has changed. Excellence in any endeavor requires a daily, year-round commitment.

If you want to play varsity HS tennis, you have to practice and play a LOT to be competitive.

You can play for fun at the HS level, but varsity tennis requires a commitment.

As a HS coach, I have to commit my time to the girls who are committed to making themselves and our team better and more competitive.

3. JH Tennis Handouts / Sign Ups

Schedules

“Remind” sign up paper

Food / Snack sign ups – just need a list of parents willing to do snacks

Do you prefer early or later in season or just whenever?

I’ll assign and let you know

Shirt Sizes and Cuts (guys and girls)

4. Uniforms / Equipment

All players will purchase a tennis shirt for $12. Guys will be issued shorts and girls will be issued skorts. The shorts and skorts will be returned to Coach Miller at the end of the season. The players will keep their shirts.

See me if you have any questions about shoes or rackets. Dick's Sporting Goods has several in the $40-60 range. Please see me or call/text me if you're unsure, see me before you make a purchase. Also, make sure tennis shoes are "non-marking".

5. Player Expectations

Work Hard, Have Fun, Learn Something, and Be a Good Teammate

We have Process/Developmental Goals (preparation, fundamentals, effort, and execution),

Not Outcome Goals (winning, team position)

6. Practices

Practices are highly developmental. I am HUGE fan of fundamentals.

If you want to understand what I expect for fundamentals go to www.browncountytennis.com/resources.html

Lots of good resources, but watch the Rick Macci forehand videos #2-3, and Macci’s backhand videos #6-7

Also, read The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle. Best book ever dealing with learning skills!

All practices are listed on schedules. I will alert you if there are any changes.

7. Matches

Home Matches – all players will be dressed and on court NLT 345pm

Snacks will be provided. We will warm up and practice before our opponents arrive.

Away Matches – we will be dressed and ready to leave the JH by 315pm.

Snacks will be provided

Players may not leave away matches with anyone other than parents.

Team Match Scores are determined by the best 3 of 5 scoring matches

There are 3 singles matches and 2 doubles matches (7 players participate in team scoring)

Every spot is determined by the coaches, and lineup are always subject to change

There are no “challenge matches” to determine starting lineups

Many factors determine lineups – a LOT of time and thought goes into this selection.

Players and parents need to trust us.

All non-varsity players play “Junior Varsity” or “Exhibition” matches that do not count toward the overall team score. It can be hard to say when JV matches begin.

On match days, we have a lineup and can give you an idea, but you will need to be patient. We can assure you we do the best to get all players on in a timely manner.

8. Match Tips for Parents

Bring Chairs – most schools have few bleachers. Your chairs will be much more comfy.

Bring Shade – hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, umbrella

Dress Cool or Warm – as you know, Indiana weather varies greatly.

It’s warm and sunny now.

It gets windy and cold especially later in the evenings and in the fall.

Be Flexible – rain, not enough opposing players cause us problems

Be a Good Sport – cheering is encouraged but this is not football or basketball

We don’t argue or groan at calls or cheer opponents’ unforced errors

`

Be Prepared to Wait – especially JV parents. Court space is often limited.

Be Courteous – 10 foot rule

Do Not Talk to or Coach Players – parent are allowed to cheer but may not talk to players during their matches. You will get called out on this

If you need to communicate with players, see me

Brown County girls’ tennis players, parents, and fans have a very good reputation.

I intend to keep it that way.

When other schools are not good sports, we still are.

Other Information

In order to make this a successful season, we need to work together and have strong communication to avoid confusion and misunderstandings. This compact is an agreement between the players, parents, Coach Miller, and Athletic Director Mr. Steele so that we are all clear about our expectations. Players and parents will be expected to follow these guidelines.

General Player and Parent Expectations

1. Players will be respectful and courteous to fellow players and opponents and will do their best to represent BCJHS athletics positively.

2. Players are expected to attend ALL practices . If a practice must be missed for any reason, the parent needs to send a note to school with the player or leave a message in the office prior to practice time.

3. Tennis players are expected to have no grades below C. I will check grades prior to each match. If students have any grades below a C-, they will not participate as a player in the match. No exceptions. Academics come first.

4. Parents will conduct themselves in an appropriate manner during matches. In tennis, spectators may not speak to or coach the players during a match other than to cheer good performance and offer encouragement (“good shot”, “nice serve” “good game/job”. Spectators may cheer and applaud good points, but it is considered poor sportsmanship to cheer the mistakes of the opponents (double faults, shots into the net, bad line calling, etc). Also, spectators must remain at least 10 feet from the fence during the match. If you have any concerns during a match, you may let the coach know and he will decide how to deal with the situation.

5. Parents will pick up players ON TIME after practices and matches.

It is important that parents and players understand that Coach Miller is ultimately responsible for this team, and it is very important that parents support his decisions regarding playing time and participation. If you have any questions or concerns, you are always welcome to speak with Coach Miller. Thank you!
