Hi Jane... thanks for your exploration into some of the Adult Education courses for your
students! You've certainly chosen the most 'popular' and beneficial courses for non-majors,
especially those who wish to teach in higher ed or the community college system. In answer to
your questions, ADED6450, 6453, and 6240 are all taught online (expertly so, I might add :).
ADED 6453 and 6240 are usually taught in spring term (and sometimes in summer based on
demand); 6450 is usually taught in fall term. All of the courses are open to non-majors
depending on space availability; and we have accommodated cohorts of 8-15+ students in special
sections specifically for particular disciplines (when we can even more appropriately direct the
instruction to the students' areas of study/emphais). ADED6487 is not yet online, but is open to
non-majors as well and is taught in spring term.
What you may not be aware of, Jane, is our Certificate in Community College Instruction; this is
a 15-hour DE certificate that includes 6453, 6450, and 6240 as core in the certificate and 6
additional hours in one's area of study (such as SpecEd, or Elem). The certificate's capstone
course is the development of a portfolio that demonstrates one's instructional proficiency - again
tailored to each student's area of study or emphasis. So, your students can achieve the
requirements for the Certificate at the same time as their MAEd. You can see the details on our
website http://www.ecu.edu/cs-educ/coad/Index.cfm (then scroll down and click on New
Certificate in Community College Instruction (Delivered via Distance Education) and I'll be
happy to talk with you more about it.
Thanks for your interest in our AE courses for your students, Jane! Please let me know how I can
help.
Peace,VWM

Subject: Specialty Area Strand
Dr. Mott,
The MAEd in Birth through Kindergarten (BK) Education contains 9 s.h. to be selected by the
student from a Specialty Area Strand. Currently those strands are Assistive Technology and
Elementary Education. We would like to expand the choices to include courses that would
prepare MAEd completers to teach in community colleges. The Adult Education (ADED)
courses in the table below appear to be relevant.
Before presenting this strand as an option, we need to know if students admitted to the MAEd in
Birth through Kindergarten will be allowed to enroll in any or all of those courses. The 20062007 Graduate Catalog did not show prerequisites for any of them.
In addition, we need to know how often each course is offered and if it is offered on-campus
and/or online.
I hope the table will make it easy for you to respond by highlighting the words that apply and
noting whether or not the class is open to non-ADED majors.
