Courses and Curricula Committee Meeting March 1, 2005 109 DH 1:00-2:00 Meeting called to order at 1:00 p.m. in 109 DH. Members present were Tricia Ferrigno (EDL), Kim Miller (KHP), Doug Smith (EDC), Jane Jensen (EPE), Lee Ann Jung (EDSRC), Lise DeShea (EDP) and Associate Deans Rosetta Sandidge and Eric Anderman (ex-officio). Also present were Lars Björk (EDL) and Jim Rinehart (EDL). Administrative Associate Jason Horger took notes. Old Business: The minutes of the January 25, 2005, meeting of the committee were approved. New Business: Application for Change in Existing Courses: changing prefix for all EDL courses (from EDA to EDL) Tricia Ferrigno explained that this holistic change was made necessary when the Department of Administration and Supervision changed its name to the Department of Educational Leadership Studies. Motion to ACCEPT changes carried unanimously. Application for Change in Existing Course: EDL 632 Leading Organizational Change Lars Björk clarified for the committee that this course was a refinement of its predecessor, and was recast in the context of education reform. In response to Jane Jensen’s query, Lars reiterated that the course would not be short on leadership issues at the expense of reform. Motion to ACCEPT changes carried unanimously. Application for Change in Existing Course: EDL 702 Leadership in Educational Organizations II Lars told the committee that this course essentially was getting a new title. Motion to ACCEPT changes carried unanimously. Application for New Course: EDL 705 International Perspectives on Educational Reform Discussion of this new course did raise some concerns. Doug Smith and Jane Jensen both wondered whether the course would be treading on Educational Policy Studies’ collective toes. Lars answered that, according to Alan DeYoung (EPE), no. This is not a comparative ed course; instead, it focuses on the difference between old and new leadership structures within each country. Doug also raised the issue as to what “consent of instructor” entailed in the prerequisite line. Lars emphasized that he would need to know what the students planned to do with the course, and would gauge the students’ overall aptitude in graduate courses. Jane mentioned that the proposed course sounded nearly identical to the existing EPE 555, outside of the new course’s treatment of reform. She believed that both courses could fulfill the comparative ed requirement in the doctorate. Several members also pointed out typographical errors in the submitted syllabus. Motion to ACCEPT changes (with corrected syllabus) carried unanimously. Application for New Course: EDS 651 Distance Education: Delivery Application for New Course: EDS 652 Distance Education: Management and Support Doug explained that these courses are part of a Distance Learning certificate with a future EDC course. Lee Ann Jung mentioned that these courses are currently being taught under special topic titles and numbers. Essentially, the courses will teach students how to deliver Distance Education courses. Motion to ACCEPT changes (with corrected syllabus) carried unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 1:40 pm. NEXT MEETING (emergency-called): March 29, 2005, 1:30 PM @ DH 109.
