Element 4 Describe causes, and methods for prevention, of failure of wastewater pipes. Performance criteria 4.1 Wastewater pipes are described in terms of the external and internal factors, and pipe features, which cause failure. Range 4.2 external factors include but are not limited to – ground conditions, external loading, environmental (slips, earthquake), root intrusion, accidental damage, poor installation; internal factors include but are not limited to – effluent quality, water pressure, water hammer (shock loading), air in the system, excessive build-up of solid matter, excessive inflow/infiltration into wastewater pipes; wastewater pipe features include but are not limited to – material, type, condition. Wastewater pipes are described in terms of the factors which prevent failure. Range includes but is not limited to – workmanship, corrosion prevention, material selection, compatibility of materials, loading, external protection measures, flexible jointing and join location, pressure rating and allowance for cycle pressure fluctuations, materials handling and storage. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
