A Report on visit of Programme Monitoring Unit (PMU), New Delhi
A panel of Scientists constituted by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, New Delhi, visited The National Academy of Sciences,
India, Allahabad on 21st August, 2010 for the assessment of the Regional Resource Agency (i.e. NASI, Allahabad). It is worth mentioning that a
project on ‘Natural Resources Awareness’ is being successfully run by the NASI for the last three years with the help of its established 25 DNA Club
Schools (Nodal Centres) in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Dr. B. C. Sabat, Senior Scientist, Union Ministry of Environment, New Delhi;
Dr. P.K. Seth, Director, Biotech Park, Lucknow; and Dr. L. M. Misra, Scientist, CIMAP, Lucknow were the distinguished experts of the panel. The
meeting started at 8:45 am in the Council room of the Academy.
Prof. Krishna Misra, Coordinator, Indo-Russian Centre for Biotechnology, IIIT, Allahabad and General Secretary-HQ, NASI; Prof. S.L. Srivastava,
Coordinator, Science Communication Programme, NASI; Dr. Niraj Kumar, Principal Investigator, DNA Club Project and Executive Secretary, NASI;
and Dr Mohd. Masood, Co-PI, DNA Club Project, NASI provided their active support to make the visit fruitful. Prof. D.K. Chauhan, Member, LAC,
DNA Club Project, NASI, Dr. V.C. Srivastava, NASI; Sri A.K. Srivastava, Deputy ES, NASI, Sri B.P. Singh, AES, NASI; Dr. Chitranjan Kumar, JRF,
DNA Club Project, NASI and Mrs. Meera Shukla also coordinated this programme to make it a grand success.
Prof. Krishna Misra extended warm welcome; and outlined the objectives of the DNA Club (i.e. Department of Biotechnology’s Natural Resources
Awareness Club) to spread natural resource awareness among the students and general mass in order to equip them with relevant skill of bioresource
conservation.
Dr. Niraj Kumar introduced the distinguished scientists; and the 20 DNA Club Coordinators from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. Dr.
Chitranjan Kumar presented the DNA Club Annual Report (June 2009- June 2010) of NASI, Allahabad before the panel of Scientists. The highlight of
the report was : RRA (NASI, Allahabad) organized three Vacation Training Programmes (VTPs) on the theme of International Year of Biodiversity
(2010) during this year and each VTP lasted for a period of 21 days.
Dr. Niraj Kumar discussed about the visits to scientific institutions, biodiversity tours to Vindhyan region of Chitrakoot and Maihar, Pilibhit, Haridwar
and Rishikesh valley, Nanital and Bhimtal; scientific lectures, audio visuals, hand’s on experiments, proposed projects related to the diverse field of
Environment, Climate change, Biodiversity loss and Conservation. Dr. Kumar emphasized that students and teachers were fortunate to have the
exposure and opportunities to interact with the eminent scientists/resource persons. Prof. Krishna Misra presented the copies of the reports to the
visiting scientists; and also proposed a vote-of –thanks in the end of the session.
The panel of scientists/experts visited to the DNA Clubs – Mahagaon Inter College Kaushambi (in rural area) and Tagore Public School Allahabad (in
urban area) as per suggestion of Programme Monitoring Unit (PMU), New Delhi. These experts addressed a large gathering (more than 500) of
students and teachers during the functions organized at both the DNA Clubs. Dr. B.C. Sabat stressed on the need to promote and support the
participation of youth in the programmes and activities aimed for conservation of the biodiversity. He said that involvement of youngsters is vital to
save our planet earth from pollution and degradation. Dr. Sabat informed the participants about the strenuous efforts being made by the
environmentalists and others towards pollution control and conservation of nature. Students from other 5 schools around Kaushambi and 15 schools of
the city also participated in the programme held at Tagore Public School. The organizing coordinator, Shri Sanjay Srivastava motivated the students to
come forward for conserving our natural resources. Interactive sessions also followed through which the scientists made best effort to quench the thirst
of inquisitive minds of the children. The talented participants were given certificates and Prizes by the distinguished guests on this occasion.
A meeting of the DBT panel and the Coordinators of 20 DNA Clubs of U.P., M.P. and Bihar was also organized at 4:45 pm in the Council room of the
Academy. The following coordinators of DNA Club Schools were present:Sri M.S. Khan, Rewa, M.P.; Dr. A.K. Dubey, Khajuraho, M.P.; Mr. Manish Agrawal, Satna, M.P.; Sri Atul K. Garg, Maihar, M.P.; Mr. K.D. Gupta,

S.K. Verma, Nalanda, Bihar. All the invited distinguished persons provided their opinion and the following important conclusions were reached at the
end of the meeting:1.
The Project on ‘Natural Resources Awareness’ be continued for the next year i.e. 2011.
2.
The Audio-Visual aids be provided to the DNA Club Schools established by RRA, NASI, Allahabad.
3.
Keeping in mind, the availability of students/ teachers participation in VTPs, the duration for each VTP will be shortened to 10 days.
4.
Each Coordinator of the DNA Club School should have a laptop with net-connect facility.
5.
Nodal Centres or DNA Club Schools be financially supported for organizing some special lectures related to natural resources, biodiversity
and its conservation.
