Introduction: We are here to teach you that you have the ability to make a difference in our environment. You can do this by overcoming bad habits like polluting and wasting water and electricity. Water Pollution: look on page 17 -Water covers most of the earth and we need to keep it clean. Water is very important to everybody; we need it to drink and to clean with and for our plants to survive. -But we haven't done a very good job keeping our water clean. In many places our water has become polluted by garbage and posiness chemicals, which people have dumped right into our rivers, lakes, and oceans. -Lots of people use wells to drink from. Does anyone have a well, or can anyone tell me what a well is? Well, those can be polluted too by harmful chemicals that people use on their lawns. We can all make a difference to keep our water clean! -Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep our water clean? 1) Pick up garbage. This will help to keep our water and our earth clean. 2) Don't let harmful chemicals spill. Has anyone here ever used paint? Well that is very harmful when it is spilled onto the ground because it could seep into our water supply. And paint is really harmful if you drink it. 3) When you are walking your pets and they have to go to the bathroom, don't let them go near a river or any water source. -It is also very important to save our water. More and more people are being born everyday, but we still have the same amount of drinking water, no matter how many people are born. - How can you help preserve or drinking water? Look on page 44-55 1) Don’t let the water run when you are brushing your teeth or washing you face. 2) Take showers instead of baths. Taking a bath uses three times more water that a shower does. 3) When watering your lawn with a sprinkler, make sure all the water hits the grass, not the pavement. If the water hits the pavement it will evaporate and won't help you lawn grow. Air Pollution: -Air pollution causes acid rain. Acid rain is acidic like lemon juice. It is not good for our environment. Look on page 11 -If we stop polluting the air, then we can decrease the amount of acid rain we produce. -What kinds of things cause air pollution? Look on page 12 1) Cars produce harmful gases, which pollute our air. 2) Factories, such as factories that make paper, also admit harmful gases into our air. ● Not only do these harmful gases cause acid rain, but they also form smog. Have you guys ever seen fog before? Well picture fog being made up of polluted air. It looks very brown and is found mostly in cities where there are many cars and factories. 3) Power plants also produce pollution. Power plants make electricity, without power plants we wouldn’t have any electricity. But it is very important that we don’t use too much electricity so that the power plants don’t have to make too much which also causes pollution. -Aside from acid rain and smog, air pollution also causes the green house effect: pg 15 -A green house is a building made of glass, where you can grow flowers and plants. The sun shines through the glass and warms the building and the roof and walls keep the heat from getting out. -The Earth is a lot like a green house. A layer of gas called the ozone layer surrounds our earth. This ozone layer acts just like the glass in a green house. The sun shines through the ozone layer and heats our earth, and helps keep the heat in our atmosphere. -But, when we use electricity to heat our home and to provide light we leak gases into the air. These gages get trapped in our atmosphere by the ozone layer and our earth is becoming to warm. We call the global warming. -How can we stop air pollution? 1) Ride a bike instead of driving a car. 2) Carpool. 3) Use less electricity. When you leave a room, be sure to turn off the lights and the TV. -by doing these things we can cause less posiness gas to leak into our air. -By recycling our paper and other things we can help keep the factories from making so much which will stop them from polluting so much. Recycling: pg 22-39 -It is very important to recycle so we don’t make so much garbage or harmful gases which will pollute our air. -Who can tell me what recycling is? Recycle: To change something so it can be reused. -What kinds of things can we recycle? 1) Glass. If you recycle glass bottles, they will be broken into lots of little pieces, melted down, and formed into new bottles! That way we don't create more garbage for our earth. - Keep a box beside your garbage. Rinse out your glass bottles, take off the caps and put them in the box. When it becomes full, bring them to the recycling center! 2) Aluminum cans. The cans can be melted down and formed into more aluminum cans! 3) Plastic. Recycle your plastic bottles, (like soda bottles) and just like the glass bottles and aluminum cans, the plastic will be meted down and made into new plastic objects. You know what is great about Maine? If you bring all of your bottles and cans to a redemption center, they will pay you 5 cents for each of them, and then they will send them to the recycling center for you! You can get paid to recycle! 4) Paper. Recycle paper! The paper will be cut up into little pieces and water will be dumped on it so the paper is made into a big ball of mush. Then it will be flattened so all of the water is pressed out of it. Then it will be dried and you have new paper! Assignment: Go home and give these bulbs to your parents and tell them how important it is to stop polluting and to recycle.
