Procedures and Standards
Admissions Standards:
Selection of applicants is based on several factors, including previous academic performance and SAT scores.
Admission to the Honors Concentration requires a minimum combined score of 1770 on the Critical Reading,
Mathematics, and Writing sections. Other factors considered in the application include interest in participating in
an interdisciplinarily-focused Honors learning community, extra-curricular activities, service activities, and
references.
Course Completion Standards:
1. Completing the Honors Concentration requires completing a minimum of eight (8) Honors courses
including a minimum of four (4) interdisciplinary courses as designated by the Honors Concentration
Advisory Committee. Transfer students who have earned degrees at community colleges are evaluated
individually.
2. Students must take at least one (1) Honors course the first semester they enter the Concentration. All
incoming freshmen must enroll in Honors College Composition I or II, depending on their AP status.
3. Students may use one (1) course taken abroad in place of one (1) interdisciplinary course after submitting a
request to do so to the Coordinator. The course should be one that is not available at Rowan and is unique
to the study abroad experience.
4. Students transferring to Rowan from another four-year institution may request to have one (1) Honors
course per year of attending the earlier institution counted toward completion of the Honors Concentration.
Courses must have been completed through an Honors program at the earlier institution and have been
completed with a grade of B- or higher.
5. Internships can be counted toward academic requirements within the Honors Concentration (specifically,
one course) if:
- internship involved participation in research in or in connection to an approved institution;
- internship resulted in an institutionally sanctioned presentation and/or article submission.
The written outcome of the internship should be submitted to the Honors Board for evaluation before
academic credit toward the Honors Concentration is awarded.
Effective 12/7/10
6. Students who do not continue to progress toward Concentration completion – within their specific degree
requirements – will be required to provide a plan for completing the Concentration. These students will
receive a “request for a plan” e-mail/letter from the Coordinator. If no plan is submitted, the student will be
removed from the Concentration and will receive a dismissal letter.
Grade Standards:
1. Students must earn a GPA of 3.45 in their Honors courses to graduate with the Honors Concentration and a
cumulative GPA of at least 3.33 in order to graduate with an Honors Concentration.
2. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher beginning with the cumulative GPA earned at
the end of their fourth semester to continue to participate in the Honors Concentration. After the end of the
fourth semester, students who have a cumulative GPA of lower than 3.00 will be removed from the
Concentration immediately. These students will receive a dismissal letter.
3. Frosh with a cumulative GPA lower than 2.50 at the end of the fall semester of their frosh year will be
removed from the Concentration immediately. These students will receive a dismissal letter.
4. Frosh with a cumulative GPA lower than 2.75 at the end of the spring semester of their frosh year will be
removed from the Concentration immediately. These students will receive a dismissal letter.
5. Transfer students who have been accepted into the Honors Concentration must maintain a cumulative GPA
of 3.00 or higher for the four semesters prior to their last semester at Rowan.
6. To count toward completion of the Honors Concentration, all grades in Honors courses must be a B- or
higher. Students earning a grade of C+ or lower in an Honors course will receive a letter informing them
that the specific course does not count toward completing the Concentration.
Participation Standards:
1. Students must attend the Mandatory Meetings each semester before Registration. Students are excused
from this requirement the semester before their last semester at Rowan.
2. Honors students must participate in at least three (3) types of extracurricular activities each semester. The
activities must meet the following criteria:
a. At least one (1) extracurricular activity of the student’s choice;
b. At least fourteen (14) hours of service projects of the student’s choice. Service activities are those
in which the student volunteers his/her time, talents, or resources to help another person, cause, or
organization. Service activities may be performed on-campus or off-campus;
c. At least fourteen (14) hours of Honors Recommended extracurricular activities (HRA). HRA are
those which enhance the classroom education received by the students including field trips,
speakers, Honors’ activity groups, all Honors’ activities, etc.
3. Honors students must attend at least one (1) educational speaker event and one (1)
art/theater/musical event as part of an Honors group each academic year.
4. For each activity category (activity of choice, service projects, and HRA), a one page double-spaced
description of the activity(ies) and a reflection upon how the activity(ies) contributed to the student’s
education must be submitted to the Honors Coordinator at a date which will be specified in an
announcement each semester and posted on the Honors Website. Students who do not fulfill this
requirement may be removed from the Concentration.
5. Students who have not completed their participation requirements will not be considered for funding for
research assistantships, funding to study abroad, funding to attend conferences, or funding to attend service
activities.
Effective 12/7/10
Ethical Behavior Standards:
1. Honors students are expected to engage in and to maintain ethical standards of behavior within the
University.
2. Academic Integrity and Disciplinary Violations do serve as a cause for dismissal from the Honors
Concentration. In cases when Academic Integrity Violations are of Levels I and II as defined in Rowan
University’s Academic Integrity Policy, the dismissed student has the right to an appeal hearing at the
Honors Advisory Committee. Upon hearing the case, the Advisory Committee will make a
recommendation to the Coordinator regarding the status of the appealing student. The final decision will be
made by the Coordinator of the Honors Concentration. In the cases of Level III violations of Academic
Integrity Policy and violations that result in suspension from Rowan University, the student will be
dismissed from the Honors Concentration without the right of appeal.
3. Faculty may request that a student be removed from the Honors Concentration as a result of unethical
behavior. These requests will be discussed by the Honors Concentration Advisory Committee on an
individual basis.
