CSE workshops: City water & wastewater treatment (Oct. & Jan.) Dear Colleague, I am pleased to invite you to attend our workshop on ‘City water and waste management: Alternative paradigms’, conducted by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi. The workshops will be held in New Delhi on the following dates: October 16-19, 2007 and January 14-17, 2007. About the course Cities in India are set to grow, but at what cost? Exploding demands for water, tones of untreated waste. How do we even begin to compute these costs, assess the water- waste balance for our thirsty urban growth? Clearly, cities can do more with less – by cutting down on inefficiencies and distribution losses, all signs of poor management. But equally important are issues of resource equity – the massive gap in water supplies within the city. The challenge is therefore as much about justice as it is about technology. We also need to address the enormous challenge of water pollution caused primarily by human waste. We urgently need to switch from the current paradigm of capital, water and material intensive processes of waste management to a more cost effective, non-sewerage paradigm of human waste disposal. This is what our unique four-day workshop is going to teach you. Through hands-on workshops, interactive seminars, detailed case studies, field trips, and classroom instruction, the workshop explores current water-waste, pollution management practices and policies and its drawbacks, suggests an alternative paradigm more suited to the Indian situation, and teaches participants to design and implement localised wastewater treatment systems. COURSE MODULES * Status of water and excreta management in Indian cities * Water pollution and its management in Indian cities * Alternate sewage and pollution management strategies * Fundamentals of wastewater treatment * Plan, design, implement & monitor a localised wastewater treatment system * Wastewater reuse: Issues * Policies, legislation on water pollution & wastewater treatment * Site visits, film shows, planning & design workshops, hands-on workshops . A "Certificate of Participation" will be awarded to all those who complete the course. Venue: AAGC, 38, Tughlakabad Institutional Area, New Delhi - 110062 Course fee: Rs.8,800/- per participant.
