Future City Competition

As a part of the events leading up to National Engineers Week, The Future City regional
(N. California) competition was held on campus on Saturday, January 28, 2006. Teams
of seventh and eighth grade students used SimCity software to design their city models,
and then they constructed physical models of them. The contest is judged is based on a
computer evaluation of the city, the computer city design, the city model, team
presentations and project essays/abstracts written by the students on their project. The
aim of the contest is to further student interest in engineering and science.
One of the objectives of the Future City competition is to create a model city that would
work in harmony with the environment instead of against it—it will be “sustainable”
instead of “harmful.” The city will be energy efficient and recycled materials are used
for construction.
The regional winner participated in the national competition in Washington, D.C. Feb.
22, 2006.

SCU’s Civil Engineering department, the University Library, Environmental Studies
department, University Operations department and the Cypress Residential Learning
Community collaborated to present an exhibit and event covering sustainable building
practices and sustainable living in conjunction with the Future City Competition.
Thank you to Steve Chisea (Civil Engineering), Virginia Madzek, and Sean Watts
(Environmental Studies Institute), Joe Sugg (Operations), and Lester Deanes (Cypress
RLC) for their contributions to this project.
