Athens High School Course: Geometry (Minimum) Term: Fall 2008 Teacher: Kevin D. Gray Course Description: This course stresses the basic structure of Geometry. It is designed to enable students to learn both inductively and deductively in a mathematical system. Students practice problem solving skills by applying algebra to plane and solid geometric concepts. Congruence, similarity, measurement, coordinate geometry, constructions, and basic trigonometry are taught using the common definitions, postulates, and theorems of Geometry. Emphasis in this course will be placed on the objectives covered in the mathematics section of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. This course will not satisfy the requirements for an advanced diploma. Prerequisite: Algebra I or equivalent Textbook: Geometry Prentice Hall Mathematics Supplies/Materials Needed: Textbook, 3-ring binder, loose leaf paper, pencil, 4 function calculator (do not spend money on one that will compute fractions for you), graph paper, $2.00 supply fee (to cover the cost of dry erase markers, batteries, tissue, etc.) Grade Determination: Homework, quizzes, notebook tests, and class work grades will account for 25% of your grade. [Homework is very important in math courses, because retention of rules and solution methods is drastically increased by repetition.] Tests, projects, and the midterm will account for the remaining 75%. Your semester grade will be determined as follows: first 9-weeks grade (40%), second 9-weeks grade (40%), and semester test grade (20%). Other Information: The academic misconduct policy of the school will be followed in this course. Refer to the Student Handbook for the attendance policy. I welcome communication from my students and their parents. Any student who receives failing grades during the course or is need of individual help is urged to discuss this with me. I am available for extra help any morning at 7:30. Plane Geometry Syllabus The following timeframe is a general guideline. The schedule will be adjusted as necessary to meet the needs of the students.
